Chelsea Transfer News: Croatian midfielder Kovacic has comfirmed that Chelsea has asked his opinion on his national team colleague Joško Gvardiol.
Highly regarded as one of the upcoming stars from Croatia, Joško Gvardiol is one of the best young centre-backs in the world. Rising from Dinamo Zagreb’s academy, he made his senior team debut with his boyhood club.
At a very early age, Gvardiol became a starter in the Dinamo Zagreb setup and featured in more than fifty matches with Croatian giants.
After his brilliant performance with Zagreb, he signed for Bundesliga outfits RB Leipzig ahead of the 2021-22 season. Gvardiol soon established himself as a starter and has already featured in more than fifty matches. The young defender has appeared in all matches for Leipzig this season apart from their season opener.
Chelsea Transfer News: Kovacic praises Gvardiol
28 year old Chelsea midfielder Mateo Kovacic has confirmed that he was asked about his Croatian teammate Joško Gvardiol by the club.
While confirming this the Chelsea midfielder said “Yes, they asked me about Josko and I had only the best opinion of him”.
He further added that “Josko is a top quality player and people from Chelsea know that…”
According to Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, the Blues were in advanced talks with RB Leipzig to acquire the signing of Josko Gvardiol.
They even submitted an official bid of €90 million for the Croatian defender and wanted him to join in June 2023.
However unfortunately for Chelsea, the deal never went through and the Croatian signed an extension contract with Leipzig which will run until 2027.
With Thiago Silva’s future being uncertain after the World Cup, it has been understood that the Blues are still continuing their pursuit of the defender and may try to lure him out again in the winter transfer window.
The Blues have got a topsy turvy start in the English Premier League campaign. They registered a narrow victory in their previous match against West Ham and are currently in sixth place with ten points from six matches.
The Blues have not kept a single clean sheet in their last five matches. They will next face Dinamo Zagreb in their UEFA Champions League 2022/23 campaign opener.
Meanwhile, Leipzig recently suffered a very poor loss against Europa League champions Eintracht Frankfurt. They are currently tenth in the Bundesliga with five points from five matches. Leipzig will face Sakhtar Dontesk in their next match.
