Chelsea Transfer News: Leicester City Prepared to Sell Wesley Fofana

Chelsea transfer news: Leicester City are now prepared to sell Wesley Fofana.

Chelsea have made Fofana a transfer target as they look to bolster their attacking department. The Stamford Bridge outfit have already seen two bids for Fofana rejected by Leicester City.

Chelsea have not given up on their pursuit of the highly-rated French defender as they look to bolster their squad before the transfer window closes.

Fofana was left out of Leicester City’s squad for their recent Premier League game against Southampton, which they lost 1-2. Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers said the defender was not ‘in the right frame of mind’ to play against Southampton.

Ben Jacobs reports that Leicester City is now prepared to sell Fofana. He says Leicester has softened its stance on selling the player after a series of meetings between Rodgers and Fofana.

Meanwhile, Chelsea is preparing a third bid for Fofana. Jacobs adds that Chelsea’s new bid is not expected to be £85m.

Earlier reports had said that Leicester was demanding a world record fee for Fofana. Leicester reportedly wanted a fee in excess of what Man Utd paid to sign Harry Maguire, the most expensive defender in the world. That would have cost Chelsea more than £80m to sign the 21-year-old.

Jacobs further adds that “there’s a real feeling a bid shy of £80m with a preferable structure could be accepted.”

Meanwhile, Fofana has been playing for Leicester since the Foxes signed him from Saint-Étienne in 2020. Fofana joined the club on a five-year contract. He has since made 52 appearances for the Premier League side.

Fofana featured in 38 matches for Leicester in his first season with the club. 28 of those appearances came in the English Premier League.

Fofana only made 12 appearances last season, with an injury ruling him out of action for several months.

The French defender had started for Leicester in their first two Premier League games of the 22/23 season. He featured for the entirety of the match in their 2-2 draw with Brentford and 4-2 defeat to Arsenal.

Meanwhile, Fofana extended his contract with Leicester City earlier this year. He renewed his contract with the club in March 2022. Fofana’s current contract with Leicester City runs until 2027, meaning he has five years left on his deal with the Foxes.
