Chelsea transfer news: The Blues have a third bid for French defender Wesley Fofana rejected by Leicester City.
Chelsea have made Fofana a transfer target as they look to bolster their squad before the transfer window slams shut.
The Stamford Bridge outfit has so far been unsuccessful in their pursuit of Fofana, with Leicester City turning down all the offers they have submitted for the highly-rated defender.
Meanwhile, Fofana was left out of the Leicester City squad for their recent Premier League match against Southampton amid Chelsea links. The Foxes manager Brendan Rodgers said the player was not in the right frame of mind to start.
Chelsea Transfer News: Leicester City reject Blues’ £70m bid for Wesley Fofana
Telegraph report Leicester City have now rejected a third bid from Chelsea for Fofana. Chelsea’s third bid for the 21-year-old was around £70m.
The Blues had earlier seen £50m and £60m bids for Fofana turned down by Leicester. Chelsea is now considering whether to make an improved offer for Fofana.
Leicester City is reportedly demanding a world record fee for Fofana if they are to sell their prized asset. The Foxes want a fee in excess of £80m for Fofana, which – should Chelsea agree – would make him the most expensive defender in the world. That would be more than what Man Utd paid to sign Harry Maguire, currently the most expensive defender in the world.
Leicester signed Fofana from French outfit Saint-Étienne on a five-year contract in 2020. Fofana has since been playing for the Premier League side. He has so far made 52 appearances for Leicester.
38 of his appearances for Leicester came in his first season at the club. Fofana could only feature in 12 matches for Leicester last season after an injury ruled him out of action for several months.
Fofana had also started in Leicester’s first two games of the Premier League 22/23 season. He featured in their 2-2 draw with Brentford and 4-2 defeat to Arsenal. He played full minutes in both matches.
Meanwhile, Fofana recently signed a new contract with Leicester. The centre-back signed a new five-year contract with the Premier League club in March 2022. His current contract with the club runs until 2027.
It remains to be seen if Chelsea will make a fresh bid for Fofana, with just less than two weeks remaining before the summer transfer window slams shut.
