Chelsea Transfer Target Rafael Leao Wants to Stay at AC Milan, Says Paolo Maldini

Chelsea transfer target Rafael Leao wants to stay at AC Milan, club chief Paolo Maldini has claimed.

Leao was linked with Chelsea in the 2022 summer transfer window, with the Premier League interested in his services. Chelsea also made an informal approach for the highly-rated Portuguese, but AC Milan chose to turn down the Blues’ advances.

The 23-year-old winger’s current contract with Milan runs until 2024. That means he will enter the final year of his contract with the Italian side next year.

However, Maldini is confident Milan can agree on a new deal with Leao, which would extend his stay at the Serie A outfit well beyond the expiry of the current contract.

Maldini insisted that Leao wants to stay in Milan, and confirmed there will be negotiations over a new contract. However, he also stressed that no player is unsellable at the club.

Rafa understands that the path for the next few years must be at Milan. He understands it and he says it. There will be a negotiation, and we know that strong players must be paid for their value,” Maldini told La Gazzetta Dello Sport.

He added: “If the team improves further, he will have everything to do even more. Then, of course, nobody is unsellable, in any team in the world.”

Maldini was also asked if he was confident that they would reach an agreement over a new contract for Leao, and he answered in the affirmative.
