Claude Puel opens up on Mahrez’s move to the Etihad

Manchester City travel to Leicester to take on Leicester City at the King Power Stadium in the quarterfinals of the Carabao Cup

Manchester City have been in outstanding form in the premier league and currently occupy the second position with 44 points from 17 games (one behind leaders Liverpool). Leicester city, on the other hand are in the bottom half in the twelfth position with just 22 points so far. It will be a particularly emotional night and game for City winger Riyad Mahrez, who joined them in the summer from Leicester in a 50 million euros move. Mahrez made 179 appearances for the foxes.

During that period, he scored 48 goals and set up another 38. Mahrez was Leicester’s player of the season in their title winning campaign in the 2015-16 season. Talking about Mahrez ahead of the game, Leicester boss Claude Puel said, “I hope he remains on the bench of course! Riyad deserves respect because he gave his best for the club. I hope he can come back and keep a good feeling with all the people because he deserves it.

“He scored a lot of goals and he changed the game all the time and it was incredible.  He had an important part in the success of the Premier League

title and we cannot forget all he gave for the club and his team-mates and I hope he can have a good reception. I think with Riyad I tried to manage him and it was a difficult moment in the winter transfer window when he wanted to leave the club,” added Puel.

“Of course it was difficult to manage with the fans and with his team-mates also but it was important to manage him without losing his concentration. We managed his comeback with [to the starting XI] and he helped us until the end of the season when he came back after his absence. It was a difficult situation for the team, of course, but for his team-mates he gave his best when he came back.”

Author’s take

On paper, Manchester City are the obvious favourites to win but Leicester at home are a completely different team and certainly wouldn’t go down without a fight.
