Commonwealth Games 2022: Can Manpreet, Srijesh repeat the heroics of the Olympics in CWG. A chance of redemption for Indian Hockey

Commonwealth Games 2022: The 18-member Indian men’s hockey squad will be led by star midfielder Manpreet Singh.  India will be looking for a repeat of their triumphs in the Olympics, where they won bronze.

The keeping duty will be performed by Indian Golden glove PR Sreejesh. His back-up will be Krishna Pathak Harmanpreet Singh, India’s drag-flick specialist, who will serve as vice-captain and head the defensive group that also includes Varun Kumar, Surender Kumar, Amit Rohidas, Jugraj Singh, and Jarmanpreet Singh.

India last competed In the FIH Pro League 2021–22, when they finished third, behind champions Netherlands and Belgium.

India came in fourth place at the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games. They’ll be looking to improve upon their performances and play in the championship game this time.

Commonwealth Games 2022: Dominant Australia will be India’s hardest hurdle

The competition’s toughest test for India will be the reigning champions, Australia. They have been relentless in the CWG and have taken home the gold in each of the previous versions. Their neighbour New Zealand has won three medals—two silver and one bronze—. The Indian team has two silver medals from 2010 and 2014, whereas England has three bronze medals to their account.

Ten Commonwealth nations will compete, and they will be split into two pools of five teams each. Each team will play the other four teams in their respective groups once in a round-robin format. Matches will be played at the University of Birmingham Hockey and Squash Center in Birmingham.

The top two teams from each group, as determined by the group rankings, advance to the semifinals. The third- and fourth-placed teams play in the match for fifth place, while the final two teams from each group play for sixth.

The defending champions Australia were placed in Pool A with New Zealand, South Africa, Pakistan, and Scotland, whereas Team India was placed in Pool B with England, Canada, Wales, and Ghana.

Due to Covid-19, the Asian Games have been postponed till 2023. However, this has turned out to be a gift in disguise for the Indian hockey team, as they will now compete with a complete roster at the quadrennial event in the UK.

The main justification for not sending the Indian Men’s Hockey team at full strength earlier to the CWG 2022 was that if the campaign failed, it would have increased pressure for the Asian Games 2022, which would have happened just one month after Birmingham 2022.
