Since the second event in 1934, India has competed in the Commonwealth Games, with the exception of 1930, 1950, 1962, and 1986. The first Commonwealth of Nations Games took place in 1930.
India has won 503 medals at the Commonwealth Games since 1934, including 231 in the last three competitions. These medals include 181 gold, 173 silver, and 149 bronze. India had its best games in 2010 at New Delhi, winning 101 medals across all disciplines and, for the first and only time thus far, taking second place in the medal count.
India is currently fourth in the all-time medal standings, trailing only Australia, England, and Canada.

Gagan Narang, then two years old, used a toy gun to fire balloons on a shooting range on Marina Beach in Chennai. Twenty-seven years later, he was aiming for a medal at the 2012 Olympics while standing in the Royal Artillery Barracks in London.
He won bronze in the 10m air rifle competition that day, giving India its first medal of that Games cycle.
The Chennai-born shooter, a four-time Olympian with numerous World Cup victories, has made India very proud around the world.
Abhinav Bindra
As the first individual Olympic gold medalist from India, Abhinav Bindra will go down in athletic history for all time.
The men’s 10m air rifle gold medallist Abhinav Bindra won in Beijing 2008 was the pinnacle of his illustrious athletic career, which also saw him win gold at the World Championships and other medals at the Commonwealth and Asian Games.
Samaresh Jung
Samaresh, an expert with the air pistol, is one of the best shooters in history, and India is proud of him. On May 5, 1970, he was born in the stunning state of Himachal Pradesh. He works for the CISF and is an accomplished chess player.
Sarath Kamal Achanta
The greatest Indian table tennis player in history is probably Sharath Kamal. On July 12, 1982, Sharath Kamal was born in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, a city renowned for its prowess in table tennis and for producing numerous national champions.
It helped that playing table tennis was in the family DNA. Before starting to coach young athletes, Sharath’s father, Srinivasa Rao, and uncle, Muralidhar Rao, were both competitive players.
