Antonio Conte has had his say about Olivier Giroud’s importance at Chelsea and why he signed the former Arsenal man to make a difference, not just on the pitch but to rival Alvaro Morata up front as well.
Despite all the criticism that the Italian manager has been getting off late, the Italian manager stuck to his choice of adding the 31 year old French international to his squad.
The former Juventus and Italy boss, who won the Premier League title in his debut season with the club has not had the best of times in the current campaign and was looking to bring in new players to change things around.
Keeping that in mind, he added Ross Barkley and Giroud this winter, though on the latter’s arrival, the club suffered a 3-0 loss to Bournemouth. The 4-1 loss to Watford after that, did not help the striker’s cause either and it seemed that things would just fall apart for him at Stamford Bridge.
However, the 3-0 win over West Brom on Monday evening showed why Conte trusts in Giroud and how he can be a vital part of this Blues’ side. The Londoners put in a solid performance against the Baggies at home and secured a comprehensive win, after a couple of losses to their name.

The win came just in time, with a list of crucial fixtures heading the way of the London based club and Giroud claimed a crucial assist on his full debut. He could have had a goal to his name as well and was replaced by Morata after an hour, who hasn’t been amongst the goals since Boxing Day, though was quite energetic on the night.
This competition for places amongst the Chelsea ranks is really good for the Londoners, who are looking to revive their form and win something this season. Though things have been falling apart at times, they are trying their best to make them work. Conte’s job is also on the line and this key win in the Premier League might boost his chances of staying with the club, till the end of the current campaign.
It will be interesting to see what happens next with Giroud, who had stressed on the fact that he had joined Chelsea for Champions League football and more game time, as he wishes to play for France at the World Cup.
