Conte’s Chelsea aren’t in the same class as Arsenal’s Invincibles – Paul Merson

Former Gunner Paul Merson believes Antonio Conte’s Chelsea aren’t in the same class as Arsenal’s Invincibles.

Paul Merson admits that Antonio Conte is building a very strong Chelsea side at Stamford Bridge this season. But he also said that Chelsea isn’t  even in the same class as Arsenal’s Invincibles.

During the 2003/04 campaign, Arsene Wenger led the Gunners to clinch the Premier League title without losing a single match. The current Chelsea side is also going through the same period without losing a single match in Premier League.

Arsenal holds the record for winning the most Premier League games in a row (13) from their 2001/02 season. But Antonio Conte’s Chelsea are close to breaking that record as the Blues are on an 11 match winning streak.

Merson wrote in his column for the Daily Star: “That Arsenal team that went the whole 2003/04 season without losing was something special and while this Chelsea team are good, they are not in the same class.”

“‘The Invincibles’ could beat you in so many different ways and they could wipe the floor with you if you weren’t careful. They had world-class players all over the pitch.”

“This Chelsea team are solid, well-coached and they have players producing magic moments.”

“But they are not going to beat teams four or five-nil every week.”

In addition to that, Merson also believes that it would be incredible if Chelsea can beat Arsenal’s record.

He said, “It would be a phenomenal feat to break Arsenal’s record which stands at 14.”

“They won 13 in a row at the end of the 2001-02 season and added the 14th at the beginning of the next, though, so if Chelsea does it all in one season it would be even more incredible.”

“The record doesn’t mean much unless you win the league, though. That’s what great teams do.”

On Boxing Day, Chelsea will play Bournemouth at Stamford Bridge, where the Blues will aim to extend their winning run. Chelsea is at the top of the table with 43 points from 17 games. They are already on a 6 point lead in the title race.

Chelsea’s star striker Diego Costa will not be available for the next game due to a suspension. Merson also said, “It’s going to be interesting to see what happens on Boxing Day when they play Bournemouth without Diego Costa, who is banned.”
