The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is mulling introducing a tactical ‘Substitute’ from IPL 2023.

Similar to Substitute, the ‘Impact Player’ concept was first used by BCCI in the recently concluded Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2022. After the successful adoption of the new rule, the board has now finalized its inclusion in the IPL 2023.

In the SMAT 2022, each team named four substitutes for their team shot at the toss. These players can then taken used as Impact Players while replacing any starting member in XI before 14th over of either inning. He would be allowed to bat or bowl his full quota of overs.

Furthermore, substitutions in the IPL 2023 would be possible only by the end of the over, rather than at any point in the game. For example, if Team A has batted their full quota of 20 overs, they can avail of an extra bowling option by replacing any batter.

Likewise, Team B can increase their batting depth by adding any batter from substitutes, while replacing the bowler. It can be a beneficial rule for both teams, and help them to lay a proper strategy.

“Also note that from IPL 2023 Season a tactical/strategic concept will be introduced to add a new dimension to IPL, wherein one substitute player per team will be able to take a more active part in an IPL match,” the BCCI said in a note sent to the IPL franchises.

Since 2008, the league has not seen many innovations in terms of rules and regulations. However, the IPL 2023 may start off a new wave of tactical thinking to the teams and players.

The X-factor used in the BBL permitted teams to employ substitutes at the ten-over mark in the first innings. The Supersub System was also used in the ODIs in 2005-06, which allowed a player to replace any member at any point during the fixture.
