In anticipation of the 16th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL), the teams shared the rosters of players they have retained. The four-time champion Chennai Super Kings (CSK), who earlier this year had a disastrous season, have made the decision to break ways with some of its key players.
The Super Kings did not retain Dwayne Bravo, a flamboyant all-rounder who is currently 39 years old. In Bravo’s case, growing age and deteriorating performances have interrupted his prolonged and vibrant relationship with CSK.
KS Vishwanathan, CSK’s CEO, was asked about the abrupt departures of Bravo, Jordan, and Milne. In reply, he said, “In Bravo’s case, age was definitely a factor. Our experience has shown that Jordan has not done well in the Indian conditions during the IPL. And lastly, Adam Milne is prone to injuries.”
CSK only managed to win four out of 14 games in IPL 2022, placing them second-last in the standings. The experiment to make Ravindra Jadeja their new captain was a total catastrophe. After some encounters, MS Dhoni replaced Jadeja as captain. Even yet, the squad was unable to advance to the playoffs.
Given how competitive all the teams were in the 2022 season, CSK has a formidable job ahead of them. CSK will need to make the right decisions about their lineup because throwing away games in a row would hurt the team’s prospects.
This May Be MS Dhoni’s Last IPL
Captain MS Dhoni has already declared that he will end the IPL after his final game at his home stadium. As the BCCI has recently stated that the alternating home and away match format will be reinstated, there is a propensity that the 2023 season might be MS Dhoni’s final.
Since CSK still has INR 20.45 crore in their bank account after releasing Bravo, Jordan, and Milne, they may consider bolstering their roster at the next IPL 2023 auction with any brilliant young players.
Sam Curran, an all-rounder for England who won the “Player of the Tournament” award in the 2022 T20 World Cup but missed the previous IPL season due to injury, is a player who can make a comeback in CSK again.
CSK’s line-up before the auction: MS Dhoni (c), Devon Conway, Tushar Deshpande, Shivam Dube, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Rajvardhan Hangargekar, Ravindra Jadeja, Moeen Ali, Deepak Chahar, Mukesh Chowdhary, Matheesha Pathirana, Dwaine Pretorius, Ambati Rayudu, Mitchell Santner, Subhranshu Senapati, Simarjeet Singh, Prashant Solanki, Maheesh Theekshana.
The IPL mini-auction is all set to take place in Kochi on December 23rd and a complete list of players participating in the auction would be announced soon.
