Laurent Rossi, the CEO of Alpine, has claimed that the team was “in shambles” when they ran the first test of the 2022 Formula 1 season. They recovered and upgraded through the season and managed to finish fourth in the championship.
Alpine left it till the last race of the season at Abu Dhabi to clinch fourth place in the Constructors Championship. They finished 14 points ahead of their nearest rivals, McLaren.
After the top three teams of Mercedes, Red Bull and Ferrari, Alpine finished in the best of the rest position and are the leader of the midfield. This is the best position that Alpine achieved since the 2018 season.
This is a huge deal for the French team given their condition during the pre-season testing. Alpine’s CEO Laurent Rossi said that he was impressed by the ability of the team to turn their fortunes around. Alpine developed their cars faster than their rivals could and managed to outscore them.
This is Alpine’s first season under new management
Rossi said, “We started the season in bad shape – I mean, we arrived in Barcelona in shambles, I could say.”
He then explained that the main plan from there on was to develop the car as fast as they could. This was their only way to make it up the grid.
When Alpine arrived at the pre-season test, it was predicted that they wouldn’t be able to finish anywhere above eighth place. As for McLaren, they had a car that was really fast.
“So I’m quite pleased that we managed to catch up and then hopefully overtake them to get where we are now,” explained Laurent Rossi
Neither Esteban Ocon nor Fernando Alonso could achieve a podium finish in the 2022 season. However, they scored points on a regular basis and finished the season at P8 and P9 respectively.
The 2022 season was the first season for Alpine under their new management. With the exit of executive director Marcin Budkowski at the end of 2021, Alpine is now being headed by Laurent Rossi with Otmar Szafnauer as the team principal.
