“Don’t Play IPL If You Want To Win The World Cup”, Rohit Sharma’s coach Advises Indian Players

Rohit Sharma‘s coach Dinesh Lad reckoned the Indian players should adjust their appearances in the Indian Premier League for workload management. He thinks that instead of taking a rest, they should establish a strong team to win World Cups.

The Indian team have failed to win ICC events since last securing a Champions Trophy title in 2013. They lost the 2015 and 2019 ODI World Cup semi-finals, while also facing a loss against West Indies in the penultimate stage of the 2016 T20 WC.

2021 T20 WC witnessed them crashing out of Super 12. This year, The Men in Blue did not produce bright performances in Asia Cup, and also faced a humbling defeat to England in the T20 WC semi-finals.

Many questions have been raised by the cricket fraternity on Rohit’s captaincy and the team’s unsettled combination. Furthermore, the frequent rest opted for by the senior players has also come in between building a potent team.

Although Virat Kohli emerged as a best batter in T20 WC, Rohit and KL Rahul struggled to get going in tandem. In this regard, Lad thinks players should limit their IPL appearances, rather than taking a rest in the international series.

Lad thinks India did not have a stable side ahead of the T20 WC, which cost them a title victory. He added that proper plans, batting and bowling line-up should be prepared by the team to prepare for big events.

The veteran coach believes the players should not compromise their presence in international cricket. He further indicated the players should contemplate on dropping IPL contracts, in order to be fresh for international cricket.

“I thought, maybe, in the last seven-eight months, we are not a stable team. If we are preparing for the World Cup, it should be an established team. Why are they playing in the IPL? Don’t play the IPL if you want to win the World Cup,” said Lad to Sportskeeda.

Moreover, Lad also added that Rohit as a captain should have been present with the team in West Indies and Zimbabwe ODI series. He thinks the presence would have been ideal for the 35-year-old to gauge a perfect team combination.

Currently, Rohit is on rest, while the Indian team is on a white-ball Tour to New Zealand. He will return to lead the side in the Bangladesh series in December.
