Former Australia Test captain, Tim Paine, Announces Retirement From Domestic Cricket

Former Australia Test captain Tim Paine announced the end of his 18-year domestic cricket career on Friday. He played his final Sheffield Shield match for Tasmania on March 17.

Once the four-day match concluded in a tie, Paine’s teammates presented him with a guard of honour. Tim Paine scored 42 (62) in Tasmania’s first innings of the Sheffield Shield match, and he was undefeated for 3 in the second.

Tim Paine’s first-class career comes to an end after 95 Sheffield Shield appearances. He made his first-class debut in 2005 against South Australia.

Paine holds the record for most first-class dismissals by a Tasmanian wicketkeeper – 295. After taking an indefinite mental health vacation last year, Paine returned to competitive play in August 2022.

In the 2022-23 domestic season, Tim Paine appeared in seven matches and scored 156 runs at an average of 17.33. He scored almost 4000 runs in first-class cricket at an average of over 30 and was a member of two title-winning Tasmania teams.

Tim Paine, widely considered as one of Australia’s top Test wicketkeepers, resigned as captain just a week before the start of the Ashes in 2021. He stood down and withdrew from the series after sexting allegations surfaced.

Paine, 38, had made no public declaration that he was playing his final match, but he had informed the Tasmania team that the match against Queensland would be his final.

Tim Paine amassed 6490 first-class runs at 29.63, including three centuries, the greatest score of 215. In 35 Tests, he averaged 32.63 and scored nine half-centuries, although he never scored a Test century.

Paine also played 35 ODIs for Australia, captaining five of them during the 2018 tour to England. He scored an ODI century and was a member of Australia’s Champions Cup victory in 2009.

He represented Tasmania in two Australia One-Day domestic tournaments in 2008 and 2010. In 2010, Tim Paine was named player of the match after hitting 100 off 118 balls against Victoria at the MCG. He also appeared in 12 Twenty20 Internationals for Australia.
