Team India recently ran through a heartbreaking defeat at the hands of the England cricket team in the second semi-final of the T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia.
As a result, they were knocked out of the competition. The fact that the bowlers failed to take even a single wicket in the semi-final summed up their approach.
After India’s exit from the competition, the speculations were rife that the Indian cricket board is planning for a split captaincy, for the betterment of Indian cricket.
If reports doing the rounds are to be believed, Hardik Pandya will be the future T20I captain. On the other hand, Rohit Sharma will still lead the team in Tests and ODIs.
However, nothing as such has been confirmed yet. Meanwhile, former Indian cricketer Harbhajan Singh has called for Ashish Nehra’s coaching stint with the Indian cricket team.
Ashish Nehra has already proved his worth as a chief coach during the last edition of the Indian Premier League with Gujarat Titans franchise.
Harbhajan Singh Calls For Ashish Nehra’s Coaching Spell With Team India
Under his tutelage, Gujarat Titans made it to the final. GT went on to beat Rajasthan Royals to win the maiden IPL title in the debut season of the tournament.
Harbhajan Singh further added that Ashish Nehra knows the T20I format better than Rahul Dravid (with all due respect). The former spinner added that Dravid has in-depth knowledge about the game.
However, he feels that the T20I format is totally a different one altogether. “He [Nehra] knows this better than – with all due respect – Rahul. We [Dravid and he] have played together for so many years; he has vast knowledge, but this is a tricky format.
“Someone who has played the game more recently is better suited for the coaching job in T20s. I am not saying you remove Rahul from T20; Ashish and Rahul can work together to build this team for the 2024 World Cup,” Harbhajan told the press in Abu Dhabi.
Currently, Rahul Dravid has been rested for the India’s tour of New Zealand. National Cricket Academy (NCA) chief, VVS Laxman has been named the acting head coach. India already won the T20I series by 1-0.
“With such an arrangement [split coaching], it is easy for Rahul as well, who can take a break as well like he did for New Zealand tour and Ashish can do the job in his absence,” the Turbanator added.
