Since Virat Kohli retired from captaincy, India has taken the field as many as seven captains. The incessant change in captaincy has led the Indian team to many defeats, including the recently concluded World T20, and has the spectators completely bewildered.
In the recently concluded One-day Series against New Zealand, Shikhar Dhawan was spearheading the Indian side while in the T20Is, Hardik Pandya was given charge of captaincy. Now, when India squares off against Bangladesh earlier this month, Rohit Sharma would be reigning the side again.
Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, Rishabh Pant, Shikhar Dhawan, and Hardik Pandya have all captained the Indian side in 2022; the most number of captains experienced by any team in a calendar year.
Now, English All-rounder, Moeen Ali stresses that Hardik Pandya should lead the Indian side and that he is the best option India has currently. With the ongoing discussions on split captaincy, the idea of Rohit Sharma leading the Test and One-day side, and Hardik Pandya domineering the T20I side seems feasible.
Hardik Pandya is the Best Option India Has Currently: Moeen Ali
The 25-year-old, Moeen Ali is currently occupied in the ongoing Abu Dhabi T10 League, captaining Morrisville Samp Army. Moeen Ali had an exhilarating last season in T10 Leauge, wherein the southpaw orchestrated 249 runs in 10 innings with a staggering strike rate of 205.8; including one half-century.
In the wake of allegations that India’s skipper Rohit Sharma will renounce the T20 captaincy following the team’s elimination from the ICC T20 World Cup 2022 semifinals, Moeen Ali has deemed Hardik Pandya the most electable applicant to lead India moving forward.
In an interview with ANI, Moeen said, “Make Hardik Pandya captain of team India. He is the best option team India has right now.”
Earlier, the 29-year-old Hardik bid farewell to his former franchise Mumbai Indians prior to the 2022 IPL mega-auction as he was roped in as a captain by Gujarat Titans. In Hardik’s captaincy, Gujarat Titans trumped the points table by 10 victories in 14 matches.
The right-handed Hardik Pandya also had a stupendous season with the bat last year as he bagged 487 runs in 15 innings with a strike rate of 131.3. Averaging 44.3, Hardik also orchestrated four half-centuries. As far as his bowling is concerned, the right-arm-medium bowler also grabbed 8 scalps in 10 innings.
The batting all-rounder Hardik Pandya was given the captaincy position for Team India after he had steered the Gujarat Titans to the IPL title in IPL 2022. Pandya excelled in this domain and helped India defeat Ireland twice in a row. In a rain-influenced T20I series against New Zealand recently, Hardik Pandya also led India to another triumph as the men in blue won the series by 1-0.
Moeen Ali also reflected on India’s loss to England in the ICC World T20 semi-finals by saying, “We were confident that day as India was short of runs and we expected that they could put around 200 or plus on scoreboard but they posted 160 plus. Our batsman was confident of smashing Indian bowlers and that’s what they did.”
The Indian Cricket Team is currently touring Bangladesh for three one-day internationals and two tests under the captaincy of Rohit Sharma. Hardik Pandya has been rested for the tour but he will be seen in action during the Sri Lanka home series in January.
