T20 World Cup 2024: The ICC has already started making planning for adjustments to the 2024 ICC T20 World Cup following the successful conclusion of the 2022 ICC T20 World Cup staged in Australia.
The number of teams competing and the format used will likely be the two biggest changes made by the ICC in preparation for the event in 2024. In contrast to the World Cup conducted in Australia.
Where four teams advanced to the Super 12 stage from the First Round, a new and improved format will be used in 2024. The USA and the West Indies will serve as the combined hosts for the upcoming major event’s enhanced format.
The top eight teams in Australia, or the top four teams from each group at the Super 12 stage, have already secured their places in the 2024 World Cup, as previously announced by the International Cricket Council (ICC).
Additionally, the next-best sides in the ICC Men’s T20I Team Rankings, Afghanistan and Bangladesh, have also confirmed their positions. Since the United States and the West Indies are the event’s current hosts. They automatically qualify for the two spots, which together make up 12 spots.
The competition for the final eight berths in 2024 will now be decided via regional play. The regional matches that determine the final slots will be given more importance in the 2024 competition.
Then they were in the Global Qualifier structure that was in existence up until the 2022 edition. The continents of Africa, Asia, and Europe have each been given two seats, for a total of six spots.
The Americas and East Asia-Pacific will each receive one of the final two seats. These clubs will fill a total of eight seats. For the 2024 competition, the 20 (12+8) teams will now be divided into four groups of five.
Furthermore, rather than a Super 12 stage, which existed up until this season. The top two teams from each group will advance to the Super 8 stage. Further dividing the eight teams into two groups of four teams each. The top two teams will advance to the elimination stages.
With two semi-finals and one final, the elimination rounds will stay the same. One-third of the 55 matches in the 2024 event will be played in the United States. With the remaining matches being played in the West Indies. According to the ICC, the updated, longer format will be used through the 2030 World Cup.
