Ravi Shastri pitch remark, IND vs AUS: The debates around Indian pitches are far from ending as Former Australian Player Mark Waugh landed a new punch on the Ahmedabad pitch where the fourth test is being played. Former Indian Head Coach Ravi Shastri and DK also questioned if three-day results are better or a five-day draw.
The most talked about Border Gavaskar Trophy is about to end with the final day of the four-match series being played at the Narendra Modi Stadium. It seems as if the fourth test match will end in a draw. India won the first two tests in Nagpur and Delhi whereas Australia won in Indore.
Following the ICC’s ‘poor’ rating of the Indore pitch, the curators have taken a completely different approach, resulting in a high-scoring match in the series decider. Australia batted first and scored a massive 480 runs, but India responded with a dominant first innings total of 571/9, taking an 88-run lead.
The match has seen four centurions – Usman Khawaja, Cameron Green, Shubman Gill, and Virat Kohli – compared to just one, Rohit Sharma, in the first three matches.

“This pitch or the other pitches?” asks Ravi Shastri while commentating with DK
All of the first three tests saw 95 wickets falling in just 7 days whereas only 21 fell in the fourth test after 4 days. As the fourth and final Test of BGT 2023 appears to be heading towards a draw, cricket experts such as Ravi Shastri, Dinesh Karthik, and Mark Waugh have questioned whether this type of result is beneficial for Test cricket.
Waugh, a former Australian cricketer who has been outspoken about his dissatisfaction with the pitches used throughout the series, criticized the Ahmedabad pitch by referring to it as a ’22-day pitch’.

“The previous three Tests were played on pitches that lasted only two days, whereas the current pitch is expected to last for 22 days. It is disappointing that India seems to be playing for a draw despite knowing that they only need to draw the game to win the series. As a result, it appears unlikely that there will be a conclusive result in this match.” he said. Waugh was earlier not impressed with India’s decision to wait till the last minute to decide which surface to play on.
During the commentary for the host broadcasters Star, Shastri, and Karthik discussed the way forward for cricket matches – whether they should aim for three-day finishes with conclusive results or continue with the traditional five-day endings that may not always have a result.
“We need to talk about these numbers – 91 wickets over seven days and 15 wickets over four days.” Former India coach Ravi Shastri shot back: “Do you prefer this type of pitch or the others? I understand that you don’t want the match to end in three days, which could be due to poor batting. It seems that those who complained about the Indian pitches are satisfied now,” Ravi Shastri and DK discussed.
