Wasim Jaffer is a former Indian batsman. He believes that, given Ranchi’s shifting surface. Men in Blue skipper Hardik Pandya might have used all four of part-time spinner Deepak Hooda’s overs.

Due to a masterful all-around performance, New Zealand upset India by 21 runs in the opening T20I on Friday, January 27. After dropping the toss and being ordered to bat first, they produced a respectable 176/6.

The hosts were subsequently subdued by the Kiwi bowlers, as Mitchell Santner and Michael Bracewell both captured 2/11 and 2/31.

India’s score in pursuit of a goal of 177 was limited to 155/9. After analyzing the Men in Blue’s efforts in Ranchi, Jaffer believed that the captain should have used his spin alternatives more effectively. He siad to ESPNcricinfo:

Given the type of spin the other spinners were producing, Deepak Hooda definitely should have bowled two more overs for India. Even Washington Sundar and Kuldeep Yadav had excellent bowling performances.

Wasim Jaffer On Hardik Pandya:

“All of the bowlers from both teams played excellently. India may have benefitted from a spinner a bit more. The cost of fast bowlers was prohibitive.

Even left-arm wrist-spinner Kuldeep made an impression with 1/20. He outperformed off-spinner Sundar, who had figures of 2/22 from his four overs. Hooda, an occasional off-spinner, played two overs for 14 runs without taking a wicket.

In Ranchi, India’s quick spinners were quite pricey. Arshdeep Singh is a left-arm seamer. He took 51 wickets in his four overs, including 27 in the final over of the innings. Pandya, the captain, delivered three overs for 33 runs, Malik, one over for 16, and Mavi, two overs, 19 runs.

Assuming the presence of dew in the air in the later part. The Men in Blue who won the toss chose to bowl first. There wasn’t a lot of it and in the second half. The New Zealand spinners made significant use of the ball’s noticeable spin.

When asked if he believed India had misjudged the circumstances in Ranchi, Jaffer responded that the statement might be made in retrospect. He clarified:

“India probably believed that the second half’s batting circumstances would be better with the dew present. But there wasn’t much dew. They (India) would not have anticipated that because of how much the ball whirled. Overall, New Zealand did perform better than India in every area.

In the second over of India’s attempt, Bracewell removed Ishan Kishan with a ball that spun quickly. The first ball Santner hit that halted and spun was then mishit by Shubman Gill. After a dismal start, the hosts could not recuperate and were 15/3 after 3.1 overs.
