World Cup Super League, India vs Australia: The IPL and WTC final 2023 overshadows the India VS Australia bilateral series. But still, the game ahead of the ICC world cup 2023 is of great significance. Both teams could try out new players and solve the problems their team faces.
Why the India VS Australia ODI series is not a part of the ICC World Cup Super League?
India and Australia are two of the favourites to win the World Cup, along with England. Because neither team has a lot of ODIs before the big tournament, these three games could give them a chance to find the right combination. On the ICC Cricket World Cup Super League points table, two of the seven teams that have already directly qualified for the World Cup are India and Australia. However, this series is not a part of the Super League.
The ODI Super League began in 2020 as part of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 qualification process. The league had 12 full-member nations including India and Australia and as well as the Netherlands. They were the winners of the ICC World Cup Cricket League Championship.
In a three-match ODI series, a team would face eight of those 12 teams, four at home and four away. The remaining two teams will be chosen based on the qualifiers. The top seven teams and the host of the World Cup would directly qualify for the World Cup.
The current three-match series does not count toward the Super League. This is because there will only be one series between two specific teams counted. In 2020, just prior to the historic Border-Gavaskar Trophy, India played Australia in a three-match series in Australia. The hosts won 2-1.
All of India’s Super League games—at home against England, South Africa, and West Indies and away against Australia, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, and Zimbabwe—will not be counted because India has already played all of them. The single home series between India and Afghanistan was postponed.

India vs Australia: How does the ICC World Cup Super League work?

The top eight finishers in the Cricket World Cup Super League, a competition featuring the world’s top 13 cricket teams that has been running for the past three years, will compete for the first eight spots in the 10-team World Cup.
Seven out of the eight spots have been decided, and England leads the competition with 155 points (15 wins and one loss). Afghanistan’s 115 points—11 wins and a no-result—are the lowest among teams that are already safe. Six other teams already have point totals that guarantee them a spot in the top eight. Australia, India, Pakistan, New Zealand, and Bangladesh have all qualified for the World Cup.

The Five teams at the bottom will compete in the ICC World Cup Qualifiers in Zimbabwe this June. While a failure in finishing in the eighth spot for the four teams in the running isn’t the be-all and end-all, an automatic spot at the World Cup would bring a huge sigh of relief for the teams who would want to avoid going through the stress of the Qualifier.
Currently, West Indies sits at the 8th position with 88 points but with no more matches left. Whereas, both Sri Lanka(77) and Ireland(68) have three games left and can overtake West Indies. South Africa with 78 points, on the other hand, has two matches left against the Netherlands.
The Netherlands and Zimbabwe are already out of contention for the 8th position in the Cricket World Cup Super League. So the three teams who do not make it will join Netherlands and Zimbabwe in the Qualifiers.
