IPL 2023: The Mumbai Indians (MI) have struggled to put together a strong playing Eleven in the Indian Premier League (IPL) during the past two years and have failed to advance to the playoffs.
That’s in part because players who haven’t produced are using a sizable portion of Mumbai’s budget, making it tough for Mumbai to strengthen other areas.
Some performers, like Jasprit Bumrah and Suryakumar Yadav, have performed admirably while others have fallen short of expectations. Here are three MI players with expensive IPL 2023 contracts.

Ishan Kishan
After releasing him before the mega-auction for the IPL 2022, the Mumbai Indians made a big play for Ishan Kishan. They ultimately paid him 15.25 crore, which the left-hander couldn’t have earned based on how well he played the year before.
In 14 games for MI in the IPL 2022, Kishan scored 418 runs at an average of 32.15 and a strike rate of 120.11. The five-time winners’ playoff aspirations were all but over by the time he seemed to be coming into his own toward the conclusion of the season.
Kishan has also played poorly in T20I matches. He is in danger of losing his spot on the national team after scoring just 200 runs in his past 14 innings at an average of 14.28 and a strike rate of 105.26.
As things stand, Kishan’s game is severely constrained. Although he is a great player with a long future ahead of him. It could be argued that MI are shooting itself in the foot by paying him such an astronomical sum.
Rohit Sharma
When did Rohit Sharma last have a successful IPL season? The MI captain has only had one season in the last five years where he has scored more than 400 runs (with a strike rate of 128.57), and only one season where his strike rate exceeded 130. (average of 23.83 in that campaign).
Rohit has had a genuinely terrible IPL season lately, failing miserably to produce huge runs and give his team a strong start at the top of the order. The opener in IPL 2022 failed to get even one fifty; in the past three seasons, he has only amassed four half-centuries.
Prior to the IPL 2022 mega-auction, Rohit was MI’s first player retained at a price of 16 crores. That makes sense considering how well he has run the franchise and how he is linked with it. However, his management style has also deteriorated, as seen by a number of questionable tactical and roster decisions during Mumbai’s two straight seasons without a postseason appearance.
Cameron Green
Given that Cameron Green hasn’t even appeared in a single game for the Mumbai Indians, this assessment may be a little harsh. Given that he has just participated in 21 matches in his T20 career, the young player’s $17.5 crore signing fee at the IPL 2023 auction looks absurd.
Green could become a celebrity, but Mumbai has a number of challenges. He is best used at the pinnacle of the hierarchy, when MI may not have a position open. The Australian’s bowling workload is being closely watched. And if he is unable to contribute with the ball, Rohit Sharma and the company will have an unbalanced starting XI.
Since MI spent so much money on Green, they no longer have the resources to support the spin and domestic pace departments, which are in disrepair. They do this despite having little confidence that the all-around talent will live up to his high price tag.
