Pat Cummins’s mother passes away: Australian skipper Pat Cummins’s mother passes away after a prolonged battle with breast cancer. The right-arm fast bowler had already left the BGT at the halfway mark to stay with his ailing mother after the second test match against India.
Between the Nagpur and Delhi Tests, Cummins was notified of Maria’s transfer to palliative care and given a choice to return home right away. However, Cummins decided to lead the team in Delhi before proceeding with his previously scheduled flight.
Half an hour before play on the second morning, while Australia’s players and staff were arriving at Narendra Modi Stadium to continue their first innings, they received the news of Maria’s passing.
Following the passing of Pat Cummins‘ mother overnight, the players of Australia’s men’s team will wear black armbands on the second day of the fourth Test against India.

Pat Cummins’s mother passes away
Cricket Australia extended their sympathies to Pat Cummins and his family and announced that the Australian team would wear black armbands as a gesture of honor.
“We are deeply saddened at the passing of Maria Cummins overnight. On behalf of Australian Cricket, we extend our heartfelt condolences to Pat, the Cummins family, and their friends,” the statement read.
BCCI has also released a statement: “On behalf of Indian Cricket, we express our sadness at the passing away of Pat Cummins’s mother. Our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family in this difficult period .”
In the first two Test series matches against India, the Australian skipper Pat Cummins’ performance was below par. He was unable to make any significant contributions with the ball, and his approach to captaincy was also questioned.
In Cummins’s absence, Australia appointed Steve Smith as a stand-in captain for the 3rd & 4th test match. Smith’s captaining brought a few positives for the visitors as they finally got the breakthrough in the series where they trailed since the very first day.
Steve Smith has proven to be a capable Test cricket captain, having led Australia to numerous triumphs. He assumed the captaincy position for the first time in 2015 and has since guided the team through series such as the Ashes and Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
