WPL 2023: WPL's opener has 6 unreal similarities with 2008 IPL's opener
On Saturday, the DY Patil Sports Stadium in Navi Mumbai hosted the inaugural edition of the Women’s Premier League, with the opening match contested between the Mumbai Indians and the Gujarat Giants. After winning the toss, Gujarat’s Beth Mooney elected to field first.
Harmanpreet Kaur, leading the Mumbai team, batted first after losing the toss, and her team’s performance was exceptional. They posted a massive target of 208 runs for Gujarat to chase. Harmanpreet, in particular, displayed fearless batting, scoring 65 runs facing off just 30 deliveries, which greatly contributed to her team’s total.
Gujarat had to face defeat in the WPL opener as they could score only 64 runs in 15.1 overs losing all 10 wickets. Dayalan Hemalatha was the top scorer for the Giants with 29 runs not out.
It took BCCI almost 15 years to host Women’s league cricket after they introduced IPL in 2008. Over the years IPL has become bigger than ever, competing in European Football leagues.
Six similarities between the IPL opener and the WPL opener
It sort of feels like a Deja Vu when we take a look and compare both IPL and WPL openers. The similarities are unreal and can’t be unnoticed once you have noticed them. Let’s take a look at those similarities:
In both the IPL and WPL, the team that won the toss (such as RCB in IPL and GG in WPL) elected to bowl first. However, the team that bats first (such as KKR in IPL and MI in WPL) has emerged as the winner of the game.
The team batted first and scored 200+ runs- In the IPL opener, the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) scored 222 runs. Similarly, in the WPL, the Mumbai Indians (MI) scored 207 runs.
The winning margin is over 140 runs (KKR beat RCB by 140 runs, MI beat GG by 143 runs.)
The highest individual score of the team batting first has been greater than the entire score of the team batting second. For example, in the IPL, Brendon McCullum’s 158 not out was 76 runs more than the Royal Challengers Bangalore’s total score of 82. Similarly, in the WPL, Harmanpreet Kaur’s 65 was just one run more than the Gujarat Giants’ total score of 64.
The strike rate of the top scorer of the team batting first was similar as well. For example, in the IPL, Brendon McCullum had a strike rate of 216.43 during his innings of 158 not out. Similarly, in the WPL, Harmanpreet Kaur had a strike rate of 216.67 during her innings of 65.
. The innings of the team batting second finished in exactly 15.1 overs (RCB 82 all-out, GG 64.)
