New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson will go under the hammer in the IPL mini-auction on December 23 in Kochi.
Earlier this month, Williamson was released from the Sunrisers Hyderabad ahead of the deadline for final retentions/released players by the franchises. This was due to his non-performance as a captain as well as the batter.
The 32-year-old, Kane Williamson, scored only 216 runs in 13 innings of the 2022 season at a paltry average of 19.64. Moreover, he had a strike rate of 93.51, which is certainly below par in the T20 format.
Also, Sunrisers managed to secure only six wins in 14 league matches, which put enough pressure on the management. As a result, they shed their top player to free up enough purses for the auction.

Although Kane Williamson has been contributing well for New Zealand in T20Is, his strike rate has been the main concern. There is enough excitement about Williamson’s bid in the forthcoming auction, which can truly define his future career in the cash-rich T20 league.

“I still love playing all three formats”, Kane Williamson
Kane Williamson reckoned that most often the auction depends on the team combinations and strategy of the team management. He thinks it’s a waiting game, on whether he any of the 10 franchises in the auction will take an interest in his services.
“In terms of the auction. You know I’ll have to wait and see. It’s certainly not up to me. People make decisions about their team and what they are after. That’s the nature of how it works,” Kane Williamson told reporters.
Further, the experienced campaigner thinks that he loves to switch between three formats, as a player. Kane Williamson added that he is working on adding value to the area, wherein he has been lacking in recent games.
The star batter is currently focussing on the ODI format, due to the 2023 World Cup scheduled next year. Under Kane Williamson’s leadership, the Kiwi team will face India from Friday (November 25) in the three-match 50-over series.
It will be interesting to see if New Zealand can pick up their form in this format, as they have an important series against Pakistan and Sri Lanka scheduled in the next few months. They are at the sixth spot in the ODI Super League table and need to be among the top eight teams to qualify for the 2023 World Cup.
