Cristiano Ronaldo news: Bruno Fernandes believes it is not fair to claim that he performs better in the absence of his compatriot and Man Utd teammate Cristiano Ronaldo.
Fernandes joined Man Utd in January 2020 and instantly hit the ground running at the Premier League side. He scored 12 goals from just 22 appearances in the second half of the 2019/20 season for Man Utd.
Fernandes maintained his high standards in his first season full season at Man Utd. He featured in 58 games for the Red Devils and scored an impressive 28 goals for the club as they finished second in the points table in the 2020/21 season.
However, the Portuguese midfielder saw a dip in his form in the 2021/22 season. Many claimed Ronaldo’s arrival to Man Utd as the reason the midfielder has failed to perform to the expectations and standards he had set over the previous seasons.
Cristiano Ronaldo News: Fernandes on he performs better without CR7 suggestions
Fernandes, though, does not agree that Ronaldo’s presence negatively affects his performance on the pitch. The Portuguese midfielder noted that most of his assists last were for Ronaldo.
He insisted that the poor season he had does not have anything to do with Ronaldo’s presence.
“Most of my assists last season were for him, so I don’t think (it is fair). I just had a poor season in terms of my own numbers. I don’t think it is about Cristiano or myself,” Fernandes said.
“Before he came, I was also taking the penalties, but I had two chances to take the penalties last season and I missed both. So I cannot blame Cristiano for taking penalties, especially when he scores them,” the Portuguese midfielder added.
Fernandes had featured in 46 games for Man Utd in the 2021/22 season and had scored 10 goals for the Premier League side.
Meanwhile, Fernandes is a key player for manager Erik ten Hag at Man Utd. The 28-year-old has featured in all 8 matches Man Utd have played so far this season. He has started in all six of Man Utd’s Premier League games so far this season.
Fernandes also made appearance off the bench in Man Utd’s Europa League 22/23 opener vs Real Sociedad. He was also in the Man Utd starting XI when they faced FC Sheriff in their next game in Europa League.
Fernandes has scored a goal, and has also provided an assist for the Red Devils so far this season.
