Cristiano Ronaldo news: Ruben Dias has insisted Portugal cannot rely solely on CR7 at the 2022 FIFA World Cup later this year.
Portugal boast a star-studded squad, headlined by none other than Cristiano Ronaldo. They have a number of players who ply their trade for some of Europe’s biggest clubs, including Dias.
Ronaldo still remains an important player for Portugal, and will certainly have a key role in the team at the 2022 World Cup. But the Portuguese superstar has not had a great start to the 22/23 season.
He has made eight appearances for Man Utd so far this season, but only three of those have been as a starter. He has only scored one goal for Man Utd this season, and that came in his latest match for the Red Devils.
Cristiano Ronaldo news: Portugal cannot solely rely on CR7 at the World Cup, says Ruben Dias
Dias has insisted Portugal cannot rely solely on Ronaldo at the FIFA World Cup. While he admitted that there is no questioning Ronaldo’s status in the squad, he stressed that they have a number of other top players.
He also pointed out that Portugal does not lack high-profile individuals but also stressed that all those have to find the best way of working together.
“No doubt about it. Ronaldo’s status is Ronaldo’s status, and I don’t think there’s much more to add to that,” the Man City defender said.
He added: “Obviously, Cristiano is a very important player for us. But if we really want to do something special, we have to understand that only all of us together can do that. We don’t lack individualities, so what we need is for all our individualities to find the best way of working together.”
Meanwhile, Ronaldo will be hoping to find form before the FIFA World Cup starts. Ronaldo will be looking to fight his way back into the Man Utd starting XI as a regular.
Ronaldo has started in two of Man Utd’s last two games. But both those games were in the Europa League.
Ronaldo also scored a goal in Man Utd’s second Europa League game of the season. He converted a penalty Diogo Dalot won to give Man Utd a two-goal advantage after Jadon Sancho had broken the deadlock.
Ronaldo will join the Portugal squad for their UEFA Nations League matches against the Czech Republic and Spain. He will be hoping to fire his side to victories in both games. Portugal will qualify for the next stage of the competition if they win both their upcoming two matches.
