Chennai Super Kings ran through a worst campaign in their history of the Indian Premier League in the last season. The three time IPL champions succumbed to more defeats (8) than the total number of victories (6) in the thirteenth edition of the Indian Premier League at the United Arab Emirates.
They lost key player Suresh Raina as the latter backed out of the tournament citing personal reasons. CSK lost dynamism in their batting attack. Ravindra Jadeja alone was trying his best to contribute to them with the bat, ball and on the field.
Maharashtra batsman Ruturaj Gaikwad who failed miserably in the first three innings stepped up and delivered the goods in the last three games of the group stage fixtures. The right-handed talented batsman brought up a half-century in his last three games which ultimately helped CSK sign off with a great last impression.
Having been at the bottom of the points table on most occasions, three consecutive wins in the last three games helped them push to the seventh spot in the points table.
MS Dhoni already retired from international cricket on August 15, 2020. After CSK’s miserable season came to a close, there were reports that MS Dhoni would retire from Indian Premier League. However, the CSK captain made himself quite clear that IPL 2020 is not his last appearance.
CSK to release 7 to 8 players
CSK had a torrid season and they will be looking forward to delivering the much-needed amends in the 14th edition of the Indian Premier League. Meanwhile, if reports doing the rounds are to be believed, then the yellow army is all set to release as many as 7 to 8 players before the IPL 2021 auction.
As per a report from InsisdeSports, CSK is going to release 7-8 big players namely Kedar Jadhav, Harbhajan Singh, Dwayne Bravo, Imran Tahir, Karn Sharma, Piyush Chawla. If this move happens, then CSK will see plenty of changes in the forthcoming season.
The aforementioned cricketers are to be auctioned for the next season in the first week of February. As per the reports, CSK has only Rs 15 lakh left to buy new players and this is the main reason why the team management planned to release some players.
The aforementioned players were far from being impressive in the last season of the IPL as CSK missed out on making it to the playoffs for the first time in their history of the tournament.
In the IPL Governing Council meeting which took place on January 4, it was planned that the process should be done by January 21, if the franchisees want to release or replace cricketers from another team.
CSK are still the second-most successful team in the Indian Premier League as they won 3 titles. It will be quite interesting to see how CSK makes these changes to become a lethal force in the next season.
What about Suresh Raina?
Amidst reports and widespread speculations that southpaw might not play for CSK again, a CSK official on the condition of anonymity confirmed that Raina will surely be a part of the next season of the IPL.
