City compared to other clubs:

Manchester City have been one of the most successful clubs in the Premier League recently. Though, when we take into account the decades-long history of clubs like Manchester United and Liverpool, City’s glimmer falls short.

City have won the League twice in the last 5 years.
City have won the League twice in the last 5 years.

They’ve been there for multiple years and we’ve only been there for five or six years. We need the same amount of time to compare to them in the Champions League.

The city reached the semis last year, after De Bruyne’s winner against PSG. De Bruyne said he feels it is absolutely necessary to win in the Champions League to make England proud. “Everybody in England will be very proud of the English teams achieving a lot in Europe, but we also want the chance to try that“, he said.

Fans’ perspective:

De Bruyne did affirm that history does not matter him to in a manner it does to others. Though, he accepted the fact that history is important to a lot of fans. As a matter of fact, history plays a crucial role in the functioning of any sporting entity. Teams like Manchester United are going through a tough phase, but the fans’ support has kept them going. As a result, we see a much-improved side right now. Therefore, clubs with a historical winning mentality always have an edge and are always more talked about.

If we do it for another 50 years and then we have a couple of Champions Leagues, people will maybe also look differently at us.

Given the strengthened academy level infrastructure and a tactical transfer policy, there are chances City will be able to reach the greater heights.

De Bruyne has a lot of potential.
