Depay’s departure : Temporary sacrifice for greater returns?

Memphis Depay finally made the much expected move away from Manchester United. Olympique Lyon signed the Dutch winger from the English giants for a fee reported to be in a region of 16.5-17.5 million Euros, with another eight millions to be paid in bonuses. Depay fell out of favour at Old Trafford after failing to put up any impressive performances for the club.

His Manchester United stint :

The young dutch winger made 53 appearances for the club and scored 7 goals. He was handed the legendary number 7 jersey, as a lot was expected out of the player who had potential. He was the best player for PSV before his transfer to United. Packed with brilliant free kick skills and dribbling prowess, Depay was slated to be a United great. Yet, things didn’t go according to the plan as often seen in football with respect to wonder kids. He barely managed to make it to the first team with the rise of players like Rashford and Marial who performed better. Hence, it was in the best interest of both the club and the player to make a transfer happen.

He was expected to be an important signing for Van Gaal.

The buyback clause :

Mourinho is one of the best managers in the world for a reason. His transfer policy after taking charge has been spot on and he hasn’t gone wrong with any of his transfers yet. Be it the Summer buys, or the sale of Schniderlin and Depay, United has done good business under him. He knows a good player when he sees one and that seems to be the case with Depay. United have inserted a buy back clause in the agreement which sends clear indications that the club does want him to prosper at his new club so that he can return home again some day. Going by Mourinho’s track record at clubs like Chelsea, players sent out from the club to gain experience(be it loan or a buy back clause) have always become better. Hence, its very likely that Depay will meet his potential at OL and come back to the Red Devils as a rejuvenated and a better player as well.
