Diego Costa’s resurgence

When Mourinho bought Costa from Atletico, he came with the profile of a goalscorer who can give you 20 odd goals a season and he lived up to it in the title winning season as he drilled in 18 goals in the league itself.

Costa’s game in Premier league has been overshadowed by his antics on the field. He is a total menace without the ball. Every time he steps up on the pitch something is bound to happen. He’s someone you’d never want to have in your opposition, he can take out the worst of you, ask Gabriel Paulista who has been in his victim twice, once during his Atletico days and then with Chelsea.

Last season, Chelsea faced their worst season of the Roman Abrahimovich era. His manager, Jose Mourinho got sacked middle of the season and he personally suffered a blow to his form. With the arrival of Antonio Conte, the rumours of his unsettlement in the English capital surfaced on tabloids all over the world. It looked like as if the media and the dismal season had his toll on the Brazilian and a move back to his former Club Atletico Madrid looked quite imminent. Antonio Conte had to work with his words to make him stay and he did but the questions were rising again that will he be able to perform on the same level as he did under Mourinho.

With 7 games into the new season, Diego Costa has certainly shown that he means business. He has racked up 6 goals and 2 assists to his name and has been Chelsea’s talisman. His escapades under Antonio Conte have also seen a dip and the bad boy seems to be getting into the good books.

Diego Costa

Costa has helped out Conte on more than few occasions this season with some very important goals. Only Sergio Aguero and Harry Kane have struck more goals in Premier league since his arrival and don’t forget he went through a forgettable last season whereas aforementioned two were banging in goals after goals for their teams speaks for the volume of the player Costa is.

Costa is a player who does better when people have confidence in him. Jose Mourinho gave him the license to do anything that he could on the pitch and he delivered. He showed confidence in him and supported him even when media went berserk over some his on-field gestures.

Antonio Conte, in his first season in Premier league will have already felt the heat and knows how important Diego Costa is for Chelsea this season. If Conte could continue to get the best out him then Chelsea will mount a serious challenge for this year’s league title and with no European allegiance this season, they could be the dark horses of Premier League.
