Arsenal technical director Edu Gaspar is keen to offload a £26million signing that Unai Emery bought at the Emirates during his tenure. Edu is reportedly open to selling Lucas Torriera, the on-loan Arsenal player in Atletico Madrid. Torreira was sent on loan to Diego Simeone’s side in a hope that he may revive his form under the fellow South American coach.
However, things didn’t turn out the way it was planned and expected. Lucas Torreira met a slow fate with Atletico Madrid too. The 24-year old begin with a slow start to life under his fellow countryman and struggled for enough game time.
With the new plans for the January transfer window where Arsenal is preparing to give full backing to Mikel Arteta in order to add creativity to the midfield area. Whether through resolving the midfield issue permanently or through signing a player on loan.
Among a number of players, Arsenal is willing to offload in the transfer window set to open on January 2nd. According to CBS Sports, Arsenal has plans for the midfielder once he returns from the loan move.
Torreira swapped a club for Thomas Partey
Torreira sealed a transfer deadline day loan move to Atletico Madrid. He was sent to a Spanish outfit as a replacement for Thomas Partey moving towards the other side. Looking towards his no such development after making a move away from Arsenal. Atletico Madrid has no plans to send him back.
The Ex Sampodria man was signed by Unai Energy after developing a huge fondness for him for £26miilion. But one can say that Torrreira has witnessed his Arsenal career sliding downhill. Even after making an excellent Gunners debut. It was during his debut season that he ended making 50 appearances for the North London outfit.
It wasn’t just about the appearance but he has also netted in the North London Derby. Toerira enjoyed a good game time under Unai Emery and a decent season at Emirates. The clouds of despair surrounded Toreirra’s career during the reign of Mikel Arteta. It was during his time that the 24-year-old faced a struggle to secure a spot under the Spanish coach.
The former Manchester City assistant coach once called him ‘Superb’ in January. However, it seems that his appearances have restricted to very fewer since then. Not that he has disappeared from the line but from the sight too and in a hope to get him back in his best form. He was sent out on loan on a temporary basis.
Struggles and poor game time followed the midfielder to Atletico Madrid. The out on loan Torreira could only make two starts in the La Liga thus far. Whereas he has played zero games in the Champions League. Since making the return after recovering completely from Covid 19. The 24-gear-old is limited to just nine appearances in all the competitions.
Arsenal’s official website quote Arteta talking about the 24-year-old in January. He said that Torreira has been superb. He fights for every inch and in all the games he’s played under him. Torreira has occupied the top position.
During a press conference in mid-December Arteta made a comment when asked about Torreira’s return to Arsenal in January. “We have been dealing with that situation, but again, when the market opens and we have the possibility to bring players in and get players out, whatever we have to do, we will discuss it,” Arteta said in his press conference on Tuesday
The purpose to take on the Torreira experiment isn’t fulfilled and Arsenal might end up waiting for a loan move to end officially once the season complete. However, If Torreira decides to make a return then Atletico will lose the option to sign him with a permanent deal at the end of the season. Following the slow start to life at La Liga side, Torerrira is linked with a move to Torino for the second half of the season.
