The upcoming Clasico between Barcelona and Real Madrid will be a highly anticipated fixture due to several reasons. The match at Barca’s Camp Nou was originally scheduled for October 26 but had to be postponed due to the demonstrations and riots by Catalan separatist groups during the period. It is set to go ahead on Wednesday with heightened security with various protest groups claiming that they will target the match.

Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu himself confirmed on Thursday that the Clasico will not be postponed again. Both the clubs sit on first and second positions respectively with 35 points each, the Catalans leading by a two-goal difference. Real Madrid missed a golden chance to leapfrog Barcelona ahead of El Clasico as they could only manage a 1-1 draw in Valencia after Barcelona had also been held to a draw on Saturday.

Barcelona have a number of key players listed as out and doubts ahead of El Clasico. Ousmane Dembele is still out injured while Arthur Melo has missed the last three games due to injury and is unlikely to feature in the high voltage clash. Dembele was ruled out for 10 weeks after sustaining a thigh injury in the 3-1 win over former club Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League at the end of last month.

Real Madrid also have a number of long-term injury problems as they head into the biggest game of the domestic season so far. Marco Asensio is out and may not play again this season after sustaining a serious knee injury during the pre-season. Eden Hazard will be on the sidelines for the remainder of the year after being diagnosed with an “external micro-fracture” of his right ankle and hence unavailable to face Barca.

James Rodriguez is expected to miss the remainder of 2019 after suffering a knee injury during a training session with Colombia in November. Lucas Vazquez has missed Madrid’s last six matches after suffering a fractured toe during a gym session last month and is not expected to return until 2020. Marcelo is still recovering from a calf problem and the return of Ferland Mendy from suspension will likely lead to Zidane taking no risks on the Brazilian.

There is plenty on the line in the Clasico as while neither side have been at their best this season, they are still the top two in La Liga. Barca have been scoring more freely than Real in the league this season, hitting 43 goals compared to Madrid’s 33. The Blaugrana, however, have looked fragile at the back having leaked eight more goals with 20 conceded so far. Barcelona will enjoy a home advantage on their side which could swing the match in their favour.
