England News: The FIFA World Cup 2022 group stage draw has been announced. Eight groups are divided after the qualification rounds and Playoffs. This is the first time that Qatar will host the event. The competition will begin on 21st November and the final will be played on 18th December after.
The top two teams from each group will qualify for the Round-of-16 and then the knockout stages will begin. There are four teams in each group and each team will play their matches against the teams in their group. Defending champions France is placed in Group D along with Denmark, Tunisia, and the winner of the Intercontinental play-offs.
Meanwhile, England has been handed a plum set of fixtures in Group B. They are drawn with Iran, the United States, and the winner of the European Play-offs meaning they will either face Wales, Scotland, or Ukraine in their group.
Former Newcastle striker, Alan Shearer believes that England’s manager Gareth Southgate will be more than happy with the fixtures they drew. He thinks Southgate will be delighted with England’s group in the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
England News: Wales or Scotland will add excitement to the group
Alan Shearer insisted that the chances of Scotland or Wales coming into the group adds some extra excitement. This suggests that England is not underwhelmed with the draw.
“Well that’s one thing of not having that group of death, isn’t it. You’re looking and thinking it’s pretty much open. I have to say I’m pleased that Scotland, Wales or Ukraine have been put in England’s group. It just adds that little bit more excitement in that group, I think. When you look at Iran and the USA, you think, okay England. But it is going to be Scotland or Wales, then that makes it that bit tougher.” said Alan Shearer in an interview about England’s group.
Shearer also said that even after the previous two heartbreaks in the Semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup and finals of Euro 2020. England will go to the 2022 World Cup with full confidence and hopefully achieve what they were trying for so long.
England finished fourth place in the 2018 FIFA World Cup. They reached the Semi-finals but were defeated by Croatia and then also lost the third-place playoff against Belgium. Harry Kane was the highest goalscorer in the 2018 FIFA World Cup scoring six goals in the tournament.
Will the wait for an International trophy end?
England has never won an international trophy since the 1966 FIFA World Cup. The three lions will hope that they win this time. They were beaten by Italy on penalties in the finals of Euro 2020.
The three lions will head to Qatar with a fresh start after their Euro Cup agony. Southgate and his men will hope to better their recent World Cup exploits where they were knocked out by Croatia in the Semi-finals.
England will kick off their World Cup campaign on 21st November against Iran. They will then lock horns with the USA on 25th November and then they will face either Ukraine, Scotland or Wales whoever wins the playoffs this summer.
After so many years of waiting and trying so hard for an international title, England is definitely looking strong this time. England has a real chance at winning the World Cup this time but they will face a tough challenge with other teams also looking great.
