With 358 runs at a 59.66 average, he is currently The Hundred’s leading run-scorer. The team is being led by Jos Buttler in its first significant match after Eoin Morgan announced his retirement from international cricket earlier this year.

After recovering from their ailments, seam bowlers Chris Woakes and Mark Wood made the squads for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup and the IT20 tour of Pakistan in September.

There has been a softening of the tone toward Hales since Eoin Morgan. England’s limited-overs captain retired in June, and Rob Key was appointed director of cricket. Any previous friction between Hales and the players appears to have been resolved.

Key said that after Jason Roy was benched due to poor form last week. Hales was the subject of extensive discussion among the selection panel as a prospective replacement opener. The panel ultimately determined that Bairstow was the best choice to bat alongside Jos Buttler at the top of the order.
