Paul Merson believes Arsenal might sign this England star.
It’s no secret that Unai Emery wants a creative midfielder, a centre back and a left winger. The Spaniard has done an impressive job but in order to finish top 4, he needs defensive enforcement. Having been linked with Gary Cahil. Nicolas Pepe and Denis Suarez, it seems Arsenal are willing to help Unai in it’s a quest to finish in top 4. According to Paul Merson, his former club might sign this England World Cup star.
Arsenal might sign Harry Maguire this month – but he is not worth the money Leicester want for him. That is the opinion of Sky Sports pundit and former Arsenal forward Paul Merson. Maguire was heavily linked with a move away from Leicester last summer after impressing for England at the World Cup. Manchester United were said to be keen on the former Hull man but a deal failed to materialise. Reports claimed Leicester were keen on a fee similar to the world-record £75million Liverpool spent on a defender in the shape of Virgil van Dijk last January. Maguire also signed a new contract at Leicester back in September to keep him at the King Power until 2023.
Merson admits Maguire is better than the defenders Arsenal boss Unai Emery currently has at his disposal. He can see his former side pursuing a deal for the 25-year-old but doubts he is worth the fees being reported. Paul Merson said, “I don’t know. I don’t think he will [fit the bill]. I’m not sure. He’s 100 times better than what they’ve got. But it would be £60m, £70m, £80m wouldn’t it. I think that’s a lot of money. It is [important] for Arsenal [to spend money on the defence], 100 percent for Arsenal. They need to sort that out. Who knows, they might buy him [Maguire], they might.”
Author’s Take:
There’s no doubt that Unai needs a centre defender. Given the fact that any club would be unwilling to do business in January, Leicester wouldn’t be willing to do business. Also, the Gunners don’t have that budget right now to sign Maguire. However, a move in the summer may be possible.
