The Manchester United legend favours a Premier League rivals over his former club as only possible title contenders and competition for the defending champions Manchester City.
Liverpool maintains their perfect start and remains unbeaten against Manchester City last Sunday. Liverpool becomes the only team to stop the Citizens from scoring this season. Chelsea is the only other team than City and Liverpool to remain unbeaten after 8 games but ex-United defender Neville feels that they are a long way out.
Neville said at Sky Sports podcast after the game, “I don’t think Arsenal [will compete]. I think Arsenal have done very well and Unai Emery has done very well but I don’t think they’re going to be challenging for the title. I saw Chelsea at West Ham a couple of weeks ago and I thought they played well in the game but West Ham could’ve taken it on the counter-attack.
I then watched the game last Saturday against Liverpool where I thought they were at full pelt to stay in that game. Even though they were 1-0 for so long, I did feel like they were really struggling to stay in the game – but doing well in the game at the same time. Not struggling in the sense of playing badly but I felt as though Liverpool just had the edge on them when I was watching.
My view is that the back four of Liverpool have proven themselves today – they didn’t need to because they’ve done well in the last six-to-12 months but today was another test for them. You always say champions win or pick points up when they’re not playing well, Liverpool isn’t at their best at the moment.”
The Reds had a tough test against Manchester City but somehow managed to come out with a draw in the end, with Riyad Mahrez missing a crucial penalty. However, while Liverpool had their fair share of chances on goal, it was their backline that was tested time after time via Sergio Aguero, Gabriel Jesus, Raheem Sterling and company. But Neville further added “The front three aren’t at their best. Today they weren’t at their best. Penalty aside, Virgil van Dijk was incredible and the rest of the defense is doing well as well.
[Andy] Robertson looks confident, [Joe] Gomez, Trent Alexander-Arnold, [Dejan] Lovren’s come in – they’ve got good options. Liverpool can be happy with a clean sheet.”
Chelsea Manager Sarri also feels the same and believes his team is still way behind the Manchester City and Liverpool in the title race this season. He said, “It’s the same that I thought one week ago. I think Manchester City and Liverpool are a step forward.”
It is going to be interesting to see the outcomes of the matches in the next few games and how the teams fare against the rivals after the international break.
Liverpool started the season as the strong title contenders after their terrific performance last season and it’s obvious to favor them over Manchester United after their recent performances.
Manchester City is again on the top of the table but only by goal difference and is chased closely by Liverpool and Chelsea and followed by Arsenal in the fourth place. It is also going to be exciting to see how United answer their critics and come on the top and improve their performances in the coming games after the international break.
