George Russell prevailed and earned his first Formula 1 Grand Prix victory in a thrilling 2022 Brazilian Grand Prix. The British driver persisted in making gains throughout the race and held the lead until the closing laps.
Mercedes’ team manager, Toto Wolff, expressed his happiness with George and the team’s performance. Toto shared what the late Niki Lauda had to say about George Russell after the race.
Niki Lauda praised the young man and assured Toto Woff that he will succeed in the future in 2017, while Russell was still racing in the F3 division.
Added Toto Wolff: “I seem to recall that Niki only ever visited the podium during George’s [title-winning campaign in] F3 season. He predicted that he would succeed.”
Niki Lauda, a great driver, served as non-executive chairman for Mercedes. Russell was a Mercedes driver, so Niki saw his enormous potential and shared it with Toto Wolff.
Toto continued by recalling how George Russell’s failure to win the Bahrain F1 Sakhir Grand Prix in 2020 was a result of a team pitstop error.
He persisted in his efforts, though, and earned his first F1 triumph. Toto admired George Russell’s perseverance and ability to keep Lewis Hamilton at bay.
Wolff remarked: “George [subbed for Hamilton, who was affected by COVID. A few years ago in Bahrain, and he just brought it home. He had an excellent day. It was absolutely remarkable how he handled Lewis’ pressure toward the finish.”
Toto Wolff claims that George Russell will finish the 2022 Brazilian Grand Prix
Toto Wolff came forward following George Russell’s first F1 victory at the 2022 Brazilian Grand Prix to explain that the 24-year-vehicle old’s had a problem.
Russell’s vehicle initially appeared to be immaculate. But the Mercedes team leader revealed that it had a water leak from the very beginning of the race.
The problem was known to the team, but they decided against telling the driver. Since it would have caused him to lose focus during the race.
Toto Wolff remarked: “Throughout the race, the vehicle had a water leak, making it uncertain if we would really finish. We all came to the conclusion after discussing it over the intercom that we would let him continue the race without any water.”
Toto said that the minor problem was quite alarming, particularly as the race came to a close.
Fortunately, the water leak didn’t lead to any significant problems that would have precluded Russell from receiving a DNF. Furthermore, George Russell maintained a consistent pace during the final circuits, keeping Lewis Hamilton at least a second behind him at all times.
