In Formula 1, since there is a lot of action happening all the time on various parts of the track, a lot of moments can go unnoticed. Such a moment, which was not broadcasted during the race, was when Zhou Guanyu overtook Alex Albon during the last lap of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
The Chinese youngster has claimed that it was his best overtake of the whole season. Zhou Guanyu put his car on the outside of the Williams at high-speed turn 9 and swept around the outside to take 12th place in Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
Zhou Guanyu was running P16 after he made a second stop and put on new soft tyres with only 14 laps left. However, with new tyres, he could easily pass Pierre Gasly and Mick Schumacher in Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
The next driver up the road was Alex Albon in the Williams. The Thai driver was running a P12 and had old medium tyres on.
Zhou Guanyu pulled off a great move around the outside at Abu Dhabi Grand Prix
With one lap left, Zhou Guanyu charged at Alex Albon with full steam. He got the DRS on the back straight and passed Alex Albon in the turn-six chicane. However, Alex Albon fought back and used the DRS on the next straight to re-pass Zhou into turn 9 in Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
However, as they went into the high-speed turn 9, Zhou Guanyu put his car on the outside. He braked deep into the corner and pulled alongside Alex Albon. The new tyres gave him enough grip to then complete the overtake on the outside.
Zhou Guanyu was ecstatic as he screamed out on the Radio, “Let’s F**king Go”.
The final aggressive charge by Zhou was not enough for Alfa Romeo as they lost out in their fight against Aston Martin in the constructor’s championship. However, the move gave confidence to Zhou Guanyu who would want to carry this momentum into the 2023 season after Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
“We had to sacrifice my strategy to hold on through the last laps, and I think we did a good job with that,” said Guanyu Zhou. “We truly gave it all out there, it was an amazing fight on track and I think also the best overtake I’ve done all season.”
2022 was Zhou’s debut season in Formula 1. He finished 18th overall with 6 points to his name. This is in stark contrast to the 49 points that his much more experienced teammate Valtteri Bottas racked up. Zhou Guanyu would want to close this gap in 2023.
