Mick Schumacher could have been the inspiration Germany needed to go back into Formula One. The leader of the AlphaTauri team, Franz Tost has such an opinion. F1 spectatorship and interest in the nation have been declining for some time. Due to this, the nation even had trouble locating broadcasters for the races that were available for free-to-air but were not shown by Sky Germany.

Franz Tost, the team manager of AlphaTauri, believes that Mick Schumacher may have been the catalyst to keep interest in Formula One from dwindling. Tost admitted to wanting to recruit Mick Schumacher for AlphaTauri.

Unfortunately, Mick Schumacher won’t be on the grid for the upcoming season, so that didn’t happen. Added Franz Tost:

“Mick Schumacher could have emerged as the new hero, but he’s currently not in the top echelon. What a loss. Not because of the company name, but more because I think he has talent and ability, I would have wanted to see him at AlphaTauri. Due to the fact that you may win more than only the Formula 3 and Formula 2 championships. But ultimately, things didn’t work out, which is regrettable.”

Mick Schumacher will be a Mercedes reserve driver the next season, although Tost urged the driver to perform well if he wanted to succeed in Formula 1. Franz Tost stated:

“If you’re continuously in the spotlight, people will only really notice you. And as an operational driver, you only do that. That Mick Schumacher returns to the starting lineup as soon as possible. Although not impossible, it’s also not simple. Mick’s interest in Germany depends on his career.”

Before, many in Germany wanted to visit Mick Schumacher’s father

Tost mentioned how everyone was a fan of Michael Schumacher when he was winning and it helped expand the sport in response to the idea that people need heroes to follow the sport.

Franz Tost contends that it will need a successful driver, not only a good team like Mercedes, for F1 to recover popularity in Germany again. He stated:

“People need heroes, and they need them to be built of flesh and blood, not metal, that much is clear. Back then, rather than the engine or the Mercedes vehicle, you wanted to see Michael Schumacher win. Booms are only set off by heroes. Michael Schumacher exemplified this.”

“Boris Becker is the second example,” he said. “Prior to him, wealthy persons were more likely to be interested in tennis. With the triumph of Boris and Steffi Graf, that drastically altered. All the youngsters at once expressed a desire to play tennis.”
