Toto Wolff, the head of Mercedes, believes Mick Schumacher has all the necessary skills to succeed in Formula One and land a regular starting position.
The young German driver made his F1 debut in 2021 with Haas. After a lacklustre second season in which Kevin Magnussen outperformed him, Schumacher was fired and Nico Hulkenberg took his position.
He was chosen by Toto Wolff to serve as their backup driver. He will assist the German team with crucial simulator work. In a recent media call, Toto Wolff said that Schumacher may end up following a similar route as Nyck de Vries, as reported by Sport Bild in Germany.
The Dutch driver was a reserve driver for Mercedes, but when the chance arose, he was released and given permission to sign with AlphaTauri. Toto Wolff believed that Schumacher may have a similar outcome, saying:
“I believe he can succeed as a racer in a permanent position provided you provide him with a secure atmosphere to grow in. Mick could experience the same thing as Nyck de Vries, who we let go so that he might pursue a profession.
Regardless of whether it’s with our team or another one. We don’t yet know. His personality is the most crucial component. He is a polite, knowledgeable, and gifted young guy. He was really good in his younger career, if you look at it.”
Mick Schumacher (12) came in at a pitiful 16th place in the driver rankings the previous year.
According to Toto Wolff, the German’s expertise of tyres as well as his experience driving the current generation of vehicles may be useful. Toto Wolff stated:
“Mick Schumacher will make a significant contribution by using the new automobile for a year. He has two years of Formula 1 experience and is familiar with the tyres and challenges of the most recent models of vehicles. He will be quite useful in both the simulator and the automobile evaluation.”
Toto Wolff went on: “For instance, his presence in the debriefing room at the track will be beneficial to us. He drives like a young man pro. We absolutely benefit from having Mick on our team because of this.”

It’s now difficult to predict where Schumacher would end up on the grid for the upcoming season. It would be fascinating to watch whether he gets a seat in 2024 because there aren’t many opportunities that might be taken advantage of.
In 2021 and 2022, Schumacher competed with Haas, but the team released him for the current campaign. He was hired by Mercedes as their backup driver to fill the role of Nyck de Vries. Vries has joined AlphaTauri as a racing driver. Schumacher, according to Toto Wolff, may be given another chance to compete in Formula 1.
