Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano has revealed why the 22-year-old midfielder Houssem Aouar did not join Arsenal last summer. The Londoners are now in a struggling position at the league and could miss out on the European spot as well. Liverpool is currently in the fight for the fifth spot with the Hammers.

The Gunners did secure some good signings last summer in search of silverware this term. However, Mikel Arteta and co didn’t expect a downgrade in their performance after such a good pre-season. The Gunners defeated Liverpool to win Community Sheild as well.

Although, the same couldn’t be carried forward into the league under Arteta. The Spanish manager saw his side almost in the relegation during the mid-season with a poor attacking front. The defensive unit has also let down the side at crucial games.

The latest tough scene for Arsenal fans was against their former boss Unai Emery’s Villarreal. The Spanish club were strong enough to send them out of the tournament. This means the club will end up trophyless this season under Mikel Arteta.

Arteta has issues at the back and also in leading the attack upfront. The London club has lacked firepower in the final third with star strikers in search of their goal-scoring boots. However, Lacazette has done a decent job in front of the goal.

Another main issue for the Gunners is in the midfield area. They lack a player, who can control the game and string the passes forward. Houssem Aouar is one such kind and Arsenal were keen to secure his services last summer. However, the deal didn’t go through.

Why Aouar snubbed Arsenal last summer?

The well-respected journalist Romano opens up about the reason behind Aouar’s Arsenal snub on The Arsenal Lounge. He said, “I remember last summer the situation of Aouar of Lyon. He wanted to play 100% European football and Champions League football, and that’s why Arsenal had no chance to sign him. Also they were negotiating, but the player was not 100% convinced because of this.”

However, Lyon’s midfielder is now set to leave the French club this summer as per L’Equipe. The reports suggest Premier League side Manchester City are also showing interest in signing the midfielder. Citizens can possibly be his destination for Champions League football and silverware.

On the other hand, Liverpool are also in need of a midfielder and has Aouar on their shortlist. Although, Liverpool aren’t playing Champions League football next season and will have to go in search of a similar option in the market.

Aouar’s current form in Ligue 1:

The French midfielder is highly rated for his awareness in the midfield area. Liverpool are also in the race for the midfielder, who can potentially replace Gini Wijnaldum at Anfield. The Dutch midfielder is likely to leave Liverpool by end of the season as a free agent.

Houssem Aouar’s profile is quite similar to Gini’s play in the midfield. The 22-year-old has age on his side and can only improve under the right manager and set-up. However, Aulas will do his best to keep the talented midfielder at Lyon.

Aouar has made 31 appearances across all competitions for the French side this season. The lad has seven goals and four assists to his name. The Frenchmen’s impressive display at last season’s Champions League lured more attention towards him.
