A much discussed and stretched renewal of Barcelona’s star player and Leo Messi’s telepathic friend on the field is finally official.

The Catalans have announced that Jordi Alba has signed a new five-year contract with the club, keeping him at the club until 2024. The left-back’s contract negotiations was in the news for the last few months and with just four months left on his previous contract, the Spaniard has now been tied to a new contract.

Messi-Alba Connection for five more years:

Alba has been in a sensational form this season with 10 assists and 2 goals in all competitions. The Spaniard has been particularly crucial for the Catalans due to his on-field chemistry with Leo Messi, with the duo’s ability to find each other from anywhere on the field.

Despite his importance in the squad and the rumours of Manchester United’s interest in the player, Jordi Alba was in the last few months of his contract as Barcelona found it difficult to balance their player wages. But the club has now tied Alba down to a 5-year contract expiring in 2024 with €500m release clause.

Barcelona published an official statement on the player’s renewal: “Barcelona and Jordi Alba have reached an agreement to renew his contract for the next five seasons, until June 30, 2024. The buyout clause is set at €500M. Over the course of the next few days, we will announce when the official signing of the new contract will be held.”

Alba signed for Barcelona from Valencia in 2012 and has held the left-back position for more than six years now. The Spaniard has won 4 league titles, 4 Copa Del Rey trophies and a Champions League title in 2015. The 29-year old is also Barcelona’s only reliable option in the left-back position with B team’s Juan Miranda as his deputy.

Barcelona currently sit at the top of La Liga standings with 7 points advantage over Atletico Madrid. The Catalans also secured their place in the Copa Del Rey final as they beat Real Madrid 4-1 on aggregate in the semi-final.

The Spanish Champions will now be action against Real Madrid once again, this time in La Liga, with the 3rd El Clasico on the season on Saturday night.
