Curtains were raised on the summer transfer window 2022 on 1st September 00:00. This transfer window was special for many clubs. Some big-name players were transferred.
Some notable transfers which took place were Lewandowski to Barcelona, Haaland to Manchester City, Casemiro to Manchester United, and many more.
The Transfer window is always exciting and full of drama. It also brings chaos and confusion at times. The most memorable day in the whole transfer window period is Deadline Day. On this day all sorts of crazy things happen, and many unknown deals go through. Also, many hearts are broken as they move and they remain at their existing club.
However, a handful of star players stayed put despite widespread rumors to the contrary. We take a look at a couple of those transfers that were never completed.
Big Transfer that didn’t take place this transfer window
Frenkie De Jong to Manchester United from Barcelona
One of the biggest transfer speculations of this window was Frenkie De Jong’s transfer. Barcelona from the start of the window was under strict financial conditions. According to Laliga rules and regulations, they had to lower their wage bill considerably. It meant they had to offload a few of their high-salary earners. One of the bigger earners in the Barcelona squad was Frenkie De Jong.
Barcelona was ready to offload Frenkie De Jong. On other hand, Erik Ten Hag joined Manchester United as their manager. Erik Ten Hag wanted a new CDM and he wanted his ex-midfielder at Ajax Frenkie De Jong. Manchester United was heavily linked to Frenkie De Jong throughout the summer transfer window.
Every day brought more and more rumors, and United even agreed to move him to Barcelona. Despite this, the transfer was never completed. De Jong made it obvious right away that he did not want to leave Barcelona, his “dream club,” and his position has not altered.
Bernardo Silva to Barcelona from Manchester City
Bernardo Silva to Barcelona was another rumor throughout the transfer window. Silva to Barcelona was always directly linked with De Jong’s exit. The deal was complicated since it involved a lot of elements.
Firstly it involved Frenkie De Jong agreeing to cancel his 17 million bonus which was inserted in his contract. Secondly, both Manchester United and Barcelona must have agreed on a transfer fee. Thirdly then De Jong agreed to join Manchester United and Barcelona would have to take Bernardo Silva. But since FDJ to Manchester United did not take place thus Silva to Barcelona too collapsed.
The second chance arrived on deadline day. When Barca was again heavily linked to Bernardo Silva once again. This time his arrival was dependent on Memphis Depay departure. But Depay on social media committed his future to Barca for this ongoing campaign. Also since it was very late on the deadline Manchester City’s board and head coach made it public that Bernardo Silva isn’t up for sale and he will remain at Etihad Stadium.
Milan Skriniar – To Paris Saint-Germain from Inter Milan
Another deal that was speculated about throughout the summer transfer window. Milan Skriniar to PSG. PSG wanted to strengthen their defense and they had identified Skriniar as their prime target. PSG tried getting Skriniar throughout this summer transfer window. Each time PSG had a bid tabled for Skriniar it was rejected by Inter Milan. The Bids started from 60 million and went on till 100m million still all were rejected.
Another reason for this deal to collapse was financial fair play restrictions. Uefa has found 8 clubs that violated its FFP rules. In that list the first name was PSG and hence they were fined heavily. The reported fine was 60 million which was challenged by PSG in court. Hence Skriniar moved to PSG from Inter Milan.
