Gabriel Jesus and Alex Telles will miss the remainder of Brazil national football team’s FIFA World Cup 2022 campaign after picking up injuries during their 1-0 defeat to Cameroon.
Both Gabriel Jesus and Alex Telles had started for Brazil in their third and final group stage match at FIFA World Cup 2022. Brazil, who came into the game against Cameroon having already sealed their qualification for round-of-16, slumped to a shock defeat to the African nation.
Despite the defeat, Brazil finished as Group G toppers. However, they were dealt a huge blow when both Gabriel Jesus and Alex Telles sustained injuries during the game.
Alex Telles was the first to suffer an injury. He picked up an injury after Cameroon midfielder André-Frank Zambo Anguissa had clattered into him at the start of second-half. Telles was eventually replaced by Marquinhos in the 54th minute of the match.

Gabriel Jesus, meanwhile, was subbed off in the 64th minute, with Pedro replacing the Arsenal attacker.
Brazil’s football association (CBF) have now confirmed both Gabriel Jesus and Alex Telles have sustained injuries to their right knee. They have ruled both Jesus and Telles out of the rest of the FIFA World Cup 2022, confirming it was ‘impossible’ for them to participate in the remainder of the latest edition of FIFA’s flagship event.
“Players Alex Telles and Gabriel Jesus underwent tests on Saturday morning accompanied by Brazil team doctor Rodrigo Lasmar and a MRI on their right knees confirmed the extent of the injuries and the impossibility of recovery in time to participate in the Fifa World Cup Qatar 2022,” the CBF statement read.
The injury to Jesus and Telles is a blow for Brazil as they eye to win a record-extending sixth FIFA World Cup title. Jesus had come off the bench in Brazil’s first two matches and started for them in their third at Qatar World Cup 2022.
Telles, meanwhile, has featured in two matches – as a substitute in their 1-0 win over Switzerland and as a starter in a 1-0 defeat to Cameroon.
Meanwhile, Brazil will face South Korea in the round-of-16 FIFA World Cup 2022. South Korea have qualified for the knock-out stages after finishing second in Group H.
