Cristiano Ronaldo says there isn’t any fight with Lionel Messi and claims he doesn’t like comparisons made with Barcelona superstar.

The 31-year-old Real Madrid star was named MVP for 2016 by Chinese site Dongqiudi. After giving the awards, Ronaldo said that he is a rival to Messi only because the Argentine plays for a different club.

“He tries to do his best for the team and I do the same for mine,” Ronaldo said. “We’re rivals because we play for different clubs, but when we’re together there’s a mutual respect.”

“I have a normal relationship with him. People compare us all the time, it’s normal. They even compared our sons when they were born and talk about who is the fastest and smartest at school. This is all part of the business. But I think that you can’t compare these things.”

“For me, this fight doesn’t exist,” Ronaldo told reporters in China. “I don’t like to compare; this word doesn’t exist for me. We’re different, two people doing their job. That’s all.”

“But I don’t think you can compare things. Cristiano is Cristiano and Messi is Messi. We’re both great players. The individual and collective titles speak for themselves.”

After having a glorious last year with Real Madrid and Portugal, Cristiano Ronaldo was named the best player on various occasions. But the four-times Ballon d’Or winner is currently suffering a dip in the form this season.

Ronaldo says he tries to concentrate on his job and is not disturbed by the critics. “It doesn’t matter to me. I just try to do my job. Everyone has people they hate, it’s not only me. It’s part of the job,” Ronaldo said.

“I go to bed every day in a good mood. I sleep well every night. I’m not here to make my detractors happy, I’m here to make my supporters happy, the ones who show me respect and affection, who are with me all the time. That’s the most important thing for me.”

Ronaldo has scored 12 goals in La Liga this season and is behind Barcelona duo Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez who have scored 15 goals each. But Real Madrid are still in the top of the league table in La Liga with 43 points from 18 games and are also 2 points ahead of third-placed Barcelona.
