The summer transfer window came to a conclusion this Thursday. We saw many players moving from one club to another. Transfer window is a time when everyone is on their toes as anything can happen at any movement. We have seen deals being made in dying minutes while deals are collapsing in no time.
Coming to transfers, not every player is lucky enough to get his desired transfers. Some players remain unfortunate and end up with no club at the end of the transfer window. Such players are usually called free agents.
Even though the transfer window is shut meaning no clubs can negotiate deals between themselves but it doesn’t mean clubs can’t sign players. Yes of course clubs can sign players but only free agents who themselves are without a parent club.
Here in this article, we will look at such five free agents who can be snapped up by some mid-table clubs even after the transfer window is shut.
Five Free agents who can turn out to be game changers for clubs.
1. Diego Costa
The best is yet to unleash. Diego Costa throughout his career has been a beast. Be it on the field bullying defenders or getting involved in spats. Costa’s abrupt behaviour eventually led to his downfall gradually.
Diego Costa was a beast when he was at Chelsea and Atletico Madrid the previous decade. He scored an abundance of goals for these 2 clubs. But since then Costa has been playing in a lower league whereas lastly playing in Brazil where he only managed to score 6 to 7 goals in the entire season.
Diego Costa currently is a free agent and was linked to several clubs throughout the window. Costa was linked to Rayo Vallecano in Spain and to a few mid-table teams in Serie A. At one point in time, Diego Costa was linked to Manchester United. But as of today, Costa is still a free agent, and clubs looking for strikers desperately can consider him as a value addition signing.
2. Juan Mata
The former Manchester United midfielder left Old Trafford at the end of his contract on 30th June 2022. Mata has been an influential player throughout his career. Mata played a huge part in Chelsea’s success in the last decade.
Juan was rumoured to move to Leeds United wherein he would have continued in the Premier League this season. But the move didn’t materialize at all and Mata remains a free agent as of yet. Also, Mata declined many offers from many MLS Clubs in order to stay at the highest level.
Mata has decided to take a rather calmer approach regarding his new club and study a few offers from his native country Spain. Mata would be a great fit in Laliga playing in that CAM spot where he can be at his best.
3. Dan-Axel Zagadou
Zagadou was once regarded as a special talent. Zagadou at the centre back was like the great wall of China. He was strong, quick and agile. His passing game with the ball was fairly decent and was good aerial from set pieces. He was the perfect centre-back with all the necessary qualities a top club needs.
But unfortunately, over the course of seasons, repeated injury ruined his career. Once a strong centre-back became an injury-prone player and slowly went down the pecking order at Borussia Dortmund. Finally, at the end of the previous season, Dortmund decided to let Zagadou leave for free, and currently, he is a free agent looking for his next destination.
However, considering that he is just 23 years old and is 6 feet 5 inches tall, he does have a lot going for him. There have been rumours that West Ham, Inter Milan, and Roma are interested in making a deal for the player. Zagadou will be an incredible asset to any team that acquires him for nothing if he can maintain his fitness.
4. Josip Ilicic
Ilicic was once upon a time a total freak in that centre-forward role. He was one of the main catalysts in Atlanta’s rise in Serie A over the past few seasons. Ilicic was outstanding even in the Uefa Champions League. He carried Atalanta throughout his 6-year stay at the club.
Ilicic turned 35 this year and Atalanta has decided to move and has let Ilicic on expiry of his contract on 30th June 2022. He posted an emotional farewell video for his fans and Atalanta fans.
Ilicic was linked with various clubs in Serie A but the move never made it. Currently, he is a free agent. Even though he is 35, Ilicic can still be a lethal option for clubs inside the box. Clubs should give thought to the Slovenia international.
5. Ross Barkley
Ross Barkley once was regarded as one of the best midfielders in the premier league. At Everton, Barkley was the mainstay and chief contributor in the journey. But since joining Chelsea Barkley has fallen off the pecking order. At Chelsea Barkley never got ample amount of time to settle in.
At Blues Barkley only managed to make 58 appearances across 4 seasons. Barkley mainly used a rotational player and played the cup games. Later he was loaned to various clubs there and he couldn’t show his worth on the field. His final loan spell was to Aston Villa back in January.
On the deadline after waiting any good offers failed to arrive for Barkley. Chelsea decided to terminate his contract by mutual consent. With the transfer window shut and Barkley being a free agent many premier clubs are behind him. Southampton is leading the race and might end up landing the 28-year-old midfielder.
