Carlo Ancelotti Claims Real Madrid Deserved to Win El Clasico

Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti claimed that they deserved to win the game against Barcelona despite falling to a defeat to the Catalan outfit in their most recent fixture.

Real Madrid and Barcelona squared off in La Liga in their most recent fixture and it was the Catalan outfit who earned all three points from the game. An own goal conceded by Ronald Araujo saw Real Madrid take the lead, but goals from Sergi Roberto and Franck Kessie sealed the win for Barcelona.

Real Madrid headed into the game knowing a win would cut the gap between La Liga leaders Barcelona to six points. But the defeat has now left Real Madrid 12 points behind Barcelona.

Marco Asensio, who came on as a substitute, thought he had sent Real Madrid 2-1 up in the 81^st minute of the match when he put the ball in the back of the net. But the goal was ruled out by VAR for offside. Speaking after the match, Carlo Ancelotti said they still have doubts about VAR disallowing the goal Asensio scored.

“We played a good game, we deserved to win. There remains the question of the goal that was disallowed. We were convinced that the game was won. We leave this game with the confidence that we can finish the season well,” Carlo Ancelotti said [via Madrid Universal].

Had Marco Asensio’s goal stood Real Madrid would have had the lead and it could have helped them win all three points. On Asensio’s disallowed goal, Carlo Ancelotti added: “We didn’t win because there was an offside we still have doubts about. At the World Cup offsides were very clear, but here I still have doubts.”

Real Madrid now finds themselves 12 points behind Barcelona in the La Liga table. Carlo Ancelotti said that their form in January cost them in the La Liga title race. He said: “Our form in the month of January cost us.”

Real Madrid will take on Real Valladolid in La Liga in their upcoming fixture. They will then face Barcelona in Copa del Rey semi-final second leg.

Real Madrid lost the first leg as Barcelona secured a 1-0 win. Real Madrid have to turn the tie around in the second leg if they want to progress to the final of Copa del Rey.
