Real Madrid left-back Ferland Mendy is close to returning to action after recovering from an injury but remains a doubt for Los Blancos’ next match, which is against Espanyol.
Ferland Mendy has been out of action after sustaining an injury during Real Madrid’s Copa del Rey quarter-final win over fierce rivals Atletico Madrid. The Frenchman was expected to miss up to six weeks due to the injury.
Five weeks have already passed, and Ferland Mendy is close to regaining fitness. The 27-year-old trained separately from the rest of the team on Tuesday as Real Madrid resumed training after their goalless draw with Real Betis in their most recent fixture.
Ferland Mendy’s availability for Real Madrid’s La Liga match against Espanyol is complicated, according to MARCA. However, he has not been ruled out of the fixture yet, and his availability will depend on how his recovery goes in the three remaining training sessions before the call-up on Friday.

Ferland Mendy is not the only Real Madrid defender who is currently recovering from injury. David Alaba has also been spending time on the sidelines after suffering an injury during Real Madrid’s clash with Liverpool in February.
David Alaba started for Real Madrid in their 5-2 thrashing of Liverpool at Anfield in the Champions League round of 16 first leg. But he was subbed off in the 27th minute of the match after picking up an injury.

David Alaba has missed all three games Real Madrid have played since – the 1-1 draw with Atletico Madrid in La Liga, the 1-0 defeat to Barcelona in the Copa del Rey semi-final first leg, and the 0-0 draw with Real Betis in La Liga.
Like Ferland Mendy, David Alaba also remains a doubt for Real Madrid’s upcoming match against Espanyol. But Alaba too trained separately, away from the team, on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, Real Madrid now trails Barcelona by nine points in the race for the La Liga title after dropping points in their most recent fixture. Barcelona sits atop the La Liga points table with 62 points from 24 matches. Real Madrid, meanwhile, occupies second place with 53 points from 24 matches.
Meanwhile, the match between Real Madrid, who are the defending La Liga champions, and Espanyol will kick off at 6:30 pm Indian Standard Time on March 11.
