Football News: Gareth Southgate’s England Get a “Favourable” Group at the FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar

Football News: England got a favourable draw at the FIFA World Cup 2022. This would surely make the manager Gareth Southgate happy as he attempts to bring the World Cup “home”.

The Three Lions have been on the rise in the last few years under Gareth Southgate. England’s positive run of form started four years ago in their last FIFA World Cup in Russia.

Gareth Southgate’s side went all the way to the semi-finals of the competition in 2018. But a loss to Croatia in Extra-time knocked the Three Lions out of the World Cup.

England then added to this brilliant performance in the summer of 2021. Playing all their games at the Wembley Stadium, England made it all the way to the finals of the UEFA EURO 2020. But they suffered heartbreak as they lost to Italy in a penalty shootout that night.

England have been placed in Group B at the FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar. The Three Lions will face Iran, the USA, and the final European qualifier at the marquee event in Qatar later this year.

The final European qualifier would be decided between Wales, Scotland, and Ukraine. The game between Scotland and Ukraine has been delayed due to the ongoing war at the latter’s home. Hence the game is expected to be played in June.

Gareth Southgate’s side will begin their conquest against Iran on 21st November. This would be followed by the game against the United States of America on 25th November at the FIFA World Cup 2022.

England’s final group stage game would be against the European qualifier on 29th November. This could be a “tricky” affair as the Three Lions share a local rivalry with the likes of Wales and Scotland.

Gareth Southgate’s side faced off against both Wales and Scotland in the Euros competition. While they beat Wales 2-1 in the group stage in a hard-fought game in 2016, the Three Lions had a goalless draw against Scotland last year.

Ukraine too would be formidable opponents as they reached the EURO 2020 quarterfinals before being beaten by England themselves. Nevertheless, we can Expect Gareth Southgate’s side to comfortably top Group B.

A better group than 2018?

England were handed a somewhat easier group in the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia as well. The Three Lions were paired up with Panama, Tunisia, and Belgium in Group G last time around.

Having beaten Panama and Tunisia, Gareth Southgate’s team lost the final group stage game against Belgium. Courtesy of this, they finished as the runners-up in their group four years ago and would be looking to better that in Qatar this year.
