Football News: FIFA 2022 World Cup Start Date to be Moved Forward

Football News: The FIFA 2022 World Cup could kick off one day earlier than originally planned to allow hosts Qatar to participate in the first game.

The 2022 World Cup had originally been planned to kick off on Monday 21 November with the clash between Senegal and Netherlands in Group A. But FIFA is planning to move forward the start date by one day so hosts Qatar could play the first game.

As it stands, Qatar will play their first game on Monday 21 November against Ecuador in Group A – the third game of the tournament. However, that is set to change with FIFA planning to move Qatar’s opening fixture to Sunday 20 November.

It has not been confirmed, with approval being sought by the Bureau of the FIFA Council but multiple reports [via Mirror] say it is thought to be just a formality. If the change in the start date is confirmed, the 2022 World Cup will be played from 20 November through to 18 December.

The host nations of the previous four editions of the World Cup had participated in the tournament’s first game. The 2018 FIFA World Cup kicked off with hosts Russia’s victory over Saudi Arabia. Hosts Brazil defeated Croatia in the opening fixture of the 2014 World Cup.

In the 2010 World Cup, the hosts South Africa faced Mexico in the first game of the tournament. Similarly, the 2006 World Cup in Germany also had its hosts participate in the first game as Die Mannschaft defeated Costa Rica.

However, in the 2002 World Cup jointly hosted by South Korea and Japan, the opening fixture did not involve the host nations. It was played between France and Senegal, a game in which the latter shocked the former with a win.
